Not really. Even in my first run, I basically skipped levels 30 - 45 by farming the FUCK out of Tersquals. Both because they're good for reward tickets, and also good for EXP. The ones in Sylvalum can be easily grinded for a level and a half per kill if you bring along the right party members or can disable them before they OHKO your party members.

Though I do get what you mean about it being a slow start. Granted, that's most JRPGs. Trails in the Sky is an even slower start, and it ends so shortly after it finally gets good. It doesn't help that Xenoblade Chronicles X is so long that you spend the first 3 hours on the tutorial chapters.
