I already have my perfect kart and character setup which would stomp the ghosts, so I decided to go with the exact character and kart setup as the ghost and then beat them. Made it all a lot more fun and I suggest you try it. Really gets you used to all kinds of kart combos.

It's not going to give anyone an unfair advantage, you are stopped completely in your tracks if you try to do a shroomless shortcut and it slows you down a lot if you are about to go off the track at all.
