Video games have always been targeted at normies, that pic doesn't apply. Arcades were meant as a social activity and consoles were designed for children and families. Computer gaming had a lot of nerds because of how expensive and difficult to use, do they were so that's where stuff like sims, strategy games/wargames and RPG's developed. But vidya in general has always been very accessible, that's why you can pick up and play pretty much any old school arcade or Atari game easily.
