Neutral makes you go through both areas, so you'll go through purgatorium as well as Lucifer's palace. On top of that, you'll have to play through just about every side quest in order to complete Neutral. So if you're looking to complete everything, Neutral would be the best route to take. You can also hunt fiends, but their rate of finding them is insane. The fights are fairly tough though, so if you're looking for a challenge, that may be something to consider.

Grandia 2 is generally pretty easy, maybe the extra dungeon aside, but it's skippable and you don't get to it until late game.

Eye of Valmar though is a really weird difficulty spike that shows up before you reach mid-game, and nothing after it really comes close.

The cliche casual player for RPGs is someone who doesn't grind and expects to keep on progressing without putting too much thought or time into his strats and mechanics while playing the game. This boss isn't necessarily hard for normal players but the drastic hike in difficulty that comes with him is something that stops casuals in their tracks. Someone who had grinded normally while getting to this point and put more thought into their strats won't have much trouble with him, while a casual will immediately feel helpless because this is the first example of a boss actually putting up a real fight.

Granted Naraku in general is pretty dumb with it's difficulty but Mino takes it a step further after everyone gets used to Naraku's difficulty.

Basically he spams War Cry (atk and def down) a bunch, can pair up Labrys Strike, a hard hitting phys attack on multiple targets, with Charge, which doubles phys attack power for one attack, and on top of that the game's partner system has retarded AI and tends to pair you up with Walter, who likes casting Agi, and makes the Minotaur smirk (which gives full buffs until the next attack).

On top of this, his only weakness is ice, which is kind of hard to get in the first area. Only Centaurs learn it iirc and they're only level 1. It doesn't help that naraku battles give tiny amounts of exp.

Pretty much the very first fight right from the get-go after the initial cutscene in the very first level on any difficulty higher than normal is a casual filter. I can't think of any other game that pretty much went, "Okay, here's the game and now don't fucking die."
