Joe Madureira is shit. He is only good at drawing other people's creations.
He has great skills, but TERRIBLE imagination.

His designs are messy, overly elaborated.
His work in Darksiders is deplorable.

This shit is worst that the generic bulky blizzard warcraft designs.
Also, it is still a shitty design, but an improvement I give you that, compared to the main protagonist from the first game.

This is a great character design.
This is the different between someone with artistic sensibility and someone like Mad who draws with the imagination of a 12 year old who still listens to slipknot
A clean and slick design is the best choice. Subtly.
There is a way to know if you have a good character design, something that even Disney does all the time.

Make your character a silhouette and see if you can still recognize it.

Team Fortress 2 had a developer commentary mode. Some of the commentary was on the design process for the various classes in the game. A major point they emphasized was recognizable silhouettes because clarity/readability during frantic combat was a top priority.

So now we have a ton of morons who checked out the TF2 dev commentary and now think "muh silhouettes" is top tier video game art design advice that applies in every situation.
