Nah, it's not terribly outdated and the PSP version is so much streamlined that even a 5 year old could play them since you just bump into enemies and use magic spells after the first game.
Plus you have some nice artwork and music.

That's debatable, Ys is one franchise you really don't need to play in release order to enjoy. Granted I started with the PC-Engine and went through all releases in order, but a friend of mine, who I introduced to the series started with Ark, went back to Complete, then played Seven and the rest in a similar mixed fashion. His enjoyment of the series didn't suffer at all.

I just cleared YsII and i can't really say i loved the bumper car gameplay.
Still liked the games, especially the second one with the addition of magic and the bosses being actually challenging this time. Also really loved the fact you could get friendly with all NPCs while giving them gifts or getting hated by hitting them with fireballs.

I just found out that the general strategy is just to do run around the room in a loop, and beating him only took an hour or so. That was my first time playing the game, and I went with nightmare for both I and II.

I remember mimicking the exact movements of a webm of a dude beating Dark Fact after someone told me his movement patterns weren't random. I think the projectiles were random, but it still worked once I got it down. Probably the most autistic thing I've ever done in my life since I even recreated all the stumbling and random back and forth. He goes to the bottom right corner first and then bounces around the screen like a pinball. There's no random movement to Dark Fact, only straight lines. Projectiles aren't random either. He shoots fireballs and your current location which explode into smaller 8-directional fireballs. The difficulty comes from you playing picture perfect, since being off by a moment can end up changing how the arena ends up falling apart.
