DaS3 doesn't really belong on top.
For the fifth sequential release in this type of gameplay from From Software and the third installment in the Dark Souls series the game is just too unambitious and generally lacking.
It's linear, the character mechanics are stripped down, the combat design can get dull and repetitive rather easily and the graphical quality isn't anything special even though it's the first Dark Souls game to not be limited by also having to run on the PS3 or 360.
There's nothing extensively wrong with it but there's also nothing about it that is really great outside of a handful of boss battles.

I would put DaS3 in the bottom three if not below DaS2.

I played DeS after ds1 but I there's a some great things about that the series has never been able to match.

It does the dark fantasy atmosphere better than any other one in the series, (though ds1 and bb are good in their own right, just not as good), it has some of the best level design, and best boss design aswell as being the most varied.

To say that's it's average would be pretty unjust, especially considering that the following 4 games all took from it.

Crestfallen Warrior, Petrus, Solaire, Lautrec, Siegmeyer, Laurentius, Griggs of Vinheim, Big Hat Logan, Ingward, Reah of Thorolund, Quelana, Quelaag's Sister in a very slight and inconsequential way, Dusk of Oolacile, even Marvelous Chester and Hawkeye Gough. All of them featured noteworthy character development over the course of their quests to some degree or another. There's plenty of character development in Dark Souls, and substantially less in Demons' Souls.

A total lack of poise, there being almost inarguably three dominating weapons for PvP (and one of them is only for stunning people), the general difficulty of actually making it possible to enable PvP, the game actively discouraging you from entering Body Form, and the fact that both invaders and invadees can greatly lengthen a fight using their nigh-infinite stores of Grass and Spice all serve to bring the PvP down. There being a general lack of diverse movesets in the game make things even worse, as everyone who isn't a 2kat shitter or a DBS tryhard is usually going to be using the same fucking straightsword moveset that is used for half the game's weapons.

Dark gets top billing because the interactiveness of the world, the improvements to combat over Demon, and it being the second title in the series. No other iteration hadimproved upon the souls formulas.
Demon and Blood get bonus points for having more memorable plots and bringing something new to players.

Yeah nah, arcane is cool once you have dozens of Cold Abyssals and can turn any weapon into any damage type, but before then it's boring.

DaS3 is mediocre because it is uninspired, unambitious and halfassed and probably had to be shoved out the door on a deadline or something.

DeS is NOT a good game, and is an even worse iteration of the Souls series. SotFS is miles better than DeS and there is no sane arguement to the contrary.

Sorcery sucks dickballs until you get the best Sorcery staff, which you get when the game is practically over (dragon aerie). Miracles were op as fuck in the beginning but I heard that they got nerfed fiercely. Hexes might work. Honestly, just stick to meleeing shit imo. It works the best.
