I'm playing through 1 now, and it's fine but it's kind of a chore. The story is deeper than I was expecting (the empire isn't strictly evil and it's kind of hard to know what's gonna happen next outside of Odessa dying) but beyond that it's pretty bare bones. I'm like 10 hours in and I don't think I have any rune abilities or much else to do during attacks outside of the standard attack, which is dull.

It sucks though, it's lacking in content variety. Almost every mission is completed by killing the enemy leader with a few token trash mobs strewn about. Almost every map is a hill gradually rolling from bottom to top. There are almost no scripted events or interesting things.

Almost all of the games depth - its physical attack and element types, skills, stats, statuses, spells, races, tarot signs, terrain, height, directional facing, finishing moves, battlefield conditions, and etc. can be ignored in favor of a few simple strategies that are repeated ad nauseum. Tactics Ogres depth is strategically meaningless in the face of easy, simple, overpowered strategies. It doesn't get any more difficult or complex further into the campaign, either.

It's needlessly convoluted systems are an illusion for a shallow, shallow game.

I played it for the first time on the DS a year ago and loved every second of it. Also what are these flaws? I honestly can't think of any. I can admit that I didn't expect IGN to have enough taste to rank BGII in the top 3, that's well deserved. Chrono Trigger is a decent #1 too, as much as /v/ wants to hate it because it's a popular choice, CT is just great from start to finish.

On the other hand shit like world of warcraft and pokemon yellow have no place on that list, let alone near the top. The Thousand-Year Door is ranked way too low and should probably be in the top 10. A good number of games on the list are just downright bad and should be nowhere near a top 100 RPG list, some other games on the list aren't even RPGs.

You know what, the list was almost acceptable to me, if it weren't for these entries.

I absolutely adore, LOVE, the Souls series, and they put the three best on the list, but as examples of outstanding ROLE-PLAYING GAMES, they don't even fit the category of a traditional RPG - they're Action games with Light RPG elements.

Undertale isn't an RPG whatsoever.

And Inquisition is utter garbage.

Pokemon Yellow doesn't deserve to be that high on the list, unless they weighted em purely for their influence.
