The Hybrid aspect of the Switch genuinely is impressive

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I find more and more time to game with having the Switch. 15 minute work break? Perfect for a round of Puyo Puyo Tetris. Wife watching Netflix? Don't need the TV for Zelda any more. Family or friends over for dinner/drinks? Bust out some Mario Kart.

Not just finding time to game, the versatility of the Switch really does make a huge difference now when choosing what games I'm going to buy. So much so that I am almost starting to resent when games on other platforms don't give me the option to play at home or on the go. That's not to say I dislike other gaming systems -- I dislike the console wars and try to find things to appreciate from each major company -- but for me there is a huge value proposition from having a two-in-one.

I've enjoyed all of my gaming consoles and computers over the years, but I've never had a system that I've appreciated like this. It's in a class all its own.

What's everyone else's opinion? Is it something that you fully appreciate (correct) or is it just another pointless gimmick to you (wrong)?

that's an opinion but it went overboard as soon as you started a thread to post it.

normal people don't want to do splitscreen multiplayer on a tiny screen, and requiring the dock to utilize a TV significantly reduces the portability factor, which no one is planning on carrying around with them.

your opinion would have mattered a little more if you didn't interject this queer marketing aspect into it.

also the individual sideways joycons are exceptionally uncomfortable.

the dock is light as shit though, besides the screen is more than enough for splitscreen in mario kart
>>
>>376209056
You could easily reduce the dock to the size of small charger for phones and it would work. At some point, I expect to see dongles that you plug in the TV and then the Switch and get the screen on.
>>
>>376208346
There's something a little staggering about playing BotW, then just picking it up and walking away with it. It's a hell of a thing the first time you do it. I didn't think that the Switch was going to impress me as much as it did. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase so far and hope that developers warm to it.
>>
>>376209187
the dock being light doesn't mean it's not bulky in size. It could have just as easily just been a fuckin' HDMI cable instead.

and no, the screen is small. Even that monitor which is 4 times bigger than the switch screen is small.

Hunched over gaming is not endearing whatsoever.
>>
Pointless gimmick. I can't imagine actually having more than one person gather around that tiny Switch screen to play multiplayer like in the commercials. Sure it's a good handheld size for one person, but for two or more players split screen? Give me a fucking break.

That said, I own a Switch because I think it has good games. I just use it exclusively in docked mode, so I would have been happier with better specs in exchange for no gimmicks. If you take out the cost of the screen and the R&D cost of the joycons I'm sure they could have beefed up the specs without raising the price of the system.
>>

>I can't imagine actually having more than one person gather around that tiny Switch screen to play multiplayer like in the commercials.

>Snipperclips

>>
>>376209367
It will work well.
I could see bring a Switch to a party and play JackBox Party Pack 3 on it or whatever. And yeah 4 player splitscreen is small, but it function. It's great when you are at an airport or in the plane or Train or waiting at the cinema.
>>
>>376209498
It's a game about pain and suffering. The cuts reach deep into you as you struggle to complete the tasks and reach the goals.
>>
>>376209498
It's a coop puzzle game on the Switch. You cut each other in shapes to solve the puzzle.

Like a 2D Portal, kinda.
>>
>>376209367
Nintendo has the opportunity to make significantly cheaper versions of the Switch. A home console version without the screen could cost $100 less, and a portable version with built in controls instead of detacheable joycons would be priced similarly.

There were ways to accomplish having a single hardware base going forward for unified Nintendo game development, but placing the price against the consumer to buy a combination handheld home console rather than a hybrid that lay somewhere in the middle, or three separate SKU's: Home, Portable, and Home+Portable versions would be more appreciable, better value for the money, and still accomplish only having one base platform to develop games for.; and not doing this is retarded.

You cant really. The dock is what transform the USB-C into HDMI and no USB-C to HDMI dongle work with the Switch. But you can simply make a box the size of the dock internals and carry it.

Here what the whole dock is. A small PCP board with an HDMI upscaler.

we have conversations like adults

>>
>>376208346
The Switch is a half assed attempt in producing another gimmick for the market. Its success is due only to the exclusive games it has, like literally any other Nintendo console; which isn't a bad thing, I mean: regardless of the console shape and hardware, it's the games that make it successful, and this is really a universal truth.

However, if we have to look at the console itself, it's really really bad design wise (do note: consistently to what I wrote just above, I won't consider its processing power):
>ergonomics were not even considered
>battery life was hugely overlooked
>heat dissipation and heat management was not thoroughly investigated
>durability was overlooked too

Everything about the industrial design of the product and the whole engineering was just slapped together.

The console works just fine and the games sure are good, but as a product it's bad. It really is.

>normal people don't want to do splitscreen multiplayer on a tiny screen
My most normie friends invited me to play that shit in a pub last weekend, had a blast with it.

I was pretty skeptical too but I think the "normie" market is probably okay with a small screen.
Considering that this same market has been lapping up phone games with horrendous touch screen controls for years.

The people who have been exposed to years of marketing telling them that "Power = Quality" are probably going to find the switch difficult to enjoy/get behind.

>battery life was hugely overlooked
It has a huge battery that gives it a long life despite its graphical power in handheld mode. If you tweak the settings, the life is even greater then advertised.

>heat dissipation and heat management was not thoroughly investigated
You haven't seen the heat tests for docked and undocked have you? The fan and heat pipe does exactly what you would expect it to. Just don't let the thing leave sleep mode while its in a case of some kind.

>durability was overlooked too
It passes all the durability tests and some crazy shit people have come up with. It's not the Gamecube, but you wouldn't expect it to be.

For a tablet it's incredibly powerful though. Have you people not seen a PS4 or xbone? They're fucking massive. Loud as fuck with huge fans and power supplies.

Switch is the exact same package in a 6 inch tablet. You can meme about it being weak but it's technically fucking impressive
>>

>>
>>376209367
As long as it isn't splitscreen multiplayer would be fine.

Like Bomberman and Tetris is a single shared screen. Street fighter is a single screen. Those kind of games would be fine.

But yeah Mario Kart where it will cut the screen up. 3 inches of screen each doesn't sound good for multiplayer.

The single screen multiplayer experience might be perfectly ok.

You know whats fun, Specs wise, Switch is the best handheld gaming hardware you can make with current tech without going Apple 800$ or 30 minutes battery life time

>>376213628
Nintendo already won more or less anyway, the only possible real way tech can go after we get 4K 60 PFS next gen is going power handhelds/ hybrids, cause 8K or 120 FPS is a fucking meme, unless you are ready to pay more than the current 60$ top and deal with 100 GB + games. also, (8K on anything smaller than a 52" TV)

so by the times S and M move to make power handhelds, Nintendo will have already been playing in that field for 1 or 2 years
>>
>>376213887
that's the software side.
hardware wise it's weak as fuck. (i.e.: It could have been so much stronger / better.)

But then again Nintendo has to make profit. A tons of profit. So they just used an unmodified older Tegra chip.

you can not make Switch hardware better while keeping that SIZE and BATTERY TIME

>>
>>376214040
when you are playing 2 player mario cart 8 undocked at a friends house or something at 60fps, you really see how capable the system is, but we havent seen anything take full advantage of the hardware yet.
i still think botw would have ran better if it had been designed for the switch ground up.
>>
>>376214194
But that is false.
The Tegra is older and almost obsolete by today's standard. Then again see my post.
I am not saying the Switch sucks. It sucks very hard from a hardware viewpoint.

Shitty plastic front, gay overpriced accessories, joycon issues, heat problems and you fucking name it. It sucks, okay?
But that's not the point.

The software makes up very well for those flaws.

>>376214258
Again, software. Raw power is very lacking on the device.
Okay, let me put this in layman terms. See how a new game like Horizon runs on PS4. It runs good, right? Because it was built for it. To use all those piss weak shit APU cores.

Then see how APB:R runs for example, an old Unreal engine game that relies heavily on single thread performance. It runs like fucking shit.

tl;dr: If the games would not be so ingenious and so well done, it would have been a major flop. If Nintendo keeps pouring money into the games and keeps the bar high, it will be good console for years.
>>

raw power matters very little as long as the games look acceptable and run smoothly, the only issues iv had on that front is bomber man (but i think thats mainly due to lazy production and obvious issues with consoles and unity) and kokiri forest in zelda.
but yes if nintendo keeps pumping out these games every few months and support the system whole heartedly its going to be a big hit, otherwise its destined to be another indie machine.
