I liked it well enough. There is a large variety of weapons so combat has a lot of different feels depending on what you decide to use. The story isn't amazing but once you get into it some of the characters are good. Theres a bandit hunter I really like, and the guy who caused the robopocalypse is a great total dick character.

Has many monster hunter mechanics, dodging, elemental states, stuff like knockdown and stun, resistances, weaknesses, and buildups, you can break parts on monsters to gimp them, altering attack patters or to get you loot. It's pretty good. The biggest thing holding it back is that it doesn't really do anything new or exciting. What it does, it does extremely well, but never in a way that surprises you or subverts standardized video game expectations. Which I think was Zelda's greatest strength. So many times you see something and think, "I didn't know that was a thing."

There are definitely some sjw choices injected into the setting and story, but at the same time most of it is fleshed out enough that it doesn't come across as just pandering. For example, you start the game in a hyper matriarchy where women are just as capable as men and more often than not you end up saving men who've overestimated their abilities. On the flip side, the matriarchy is never set up as being particularly good. They've wronged the main character for the mere fact she's born, and even the nice leader is still a superstitious idiot. Meanwhile the character's parent and mentor growing up is essentially the epitome of man, and the lawest of lawfags.

My biggest complaint with the game (and it's minor), is the same complaint I had with the original reveal. The main character never shuts the fuck up. It's neat when your character has a line every once in a while that matches your situation, but that gets real old real fast when she has something to say about nearly everything you do. Especially after 30 minutes of playing when you're just hearing repeats and you start noticing the occasions where it doesn't even make sense for what you just did.

Also to add to this, the reason the Nora live in a matriarchy is because inside the facility where they were born, the "female" servitor was the loving comforting mother while the father was the enforcer of discipline. Because the servitors were only meant to take care of them while they were children, once they were older the discipline bit would unjustly punish them because they didn't understand certain situations etc.

I loved it and exploring the world was the most fun I've had in video games in years. But I turned off every hud element at the very beginning of the game, it looks unplayable to me with everything on.

Way too easy to kill everything except the strongest machines and even then you can just tame the hard ones. Not enough gear options and the one trick weapons like trip wire are too much of a hassle to bother with and just aren't worth it. HZD is probably the most finely-crafted open world game I've ever played.

Guerrilla really went out of their way to make sure it was a solid experience from start to finish.

The map isn't gigantic, but it's big enough and uses its space wisely so that there's always something to do, and there's no part of the map that's devoid of content.
Moreover, the game runs like a fucking dream. If you never fast traveled, there wouldn't be a single loading screen, and the framerate is remarkably consistent despite all the shit that can be rendered on-screen at any given time.

The questing is appropriately split up into different tiers. It feels good to know that each sidequest is a small story, and that all my "bring me 10 bear ribs" objectives are errands instead.

The story isn't exactly amazing, but the conceit of the world is interesting enough and the main quest is paced to feel natural no matter how much side content you're consuming between main quests.
There's a sequel hook at the very end, which is both great and frustrating. The story wraps up pretty much perfectly, and it could have ended right there as one game, but at the same time I'm very interested to see where they take this world in the future.

The gameplay feels really fresh, blending action-RPG and stealth elements in a world that's comfortable evoking bandit and monster combat even-handedly. All of the machines are interesting and are designed to keep you on your toes no matter how beefy you are. The corrupted zones were a great challenge, and being able to learn each machine's behaviors over the course of the game was satisfying from a "player growth" aspect.

I'd say a bit about the collectables but this post is 2long. Short version, they're fun.

Overall, it's a great game. Solid 8/10 at least. More open world games could learn a thing or two from it.

They don't even bother giving you the sense of danger of happening upon a dangerous site. Nope. All the machine sites are marked.

The more you zoom out the less things appear on the map. They're tiered specifically so that minutia like machine zones and campfires disappear but you can see collectable markers still.

Given the story behind the machines, I think it would be weird for there to be just one, ultra-special Thunderjaw that exists outside of every other Thunderjaw that is produced literally the exact same way.

And no one mentions what must be some of the worst sound design I've heard in a major release on this scale. Aloy never shuts up monologue-ing the most trivial commentary for every little thing happening, and in some cutscenes, the sound effects sounded completely off or were terribly muted.

Asides from robot dinosaurs and its interesting premise, there isn't a unique bone in it's body. It's another open world collectable hunt with a crafting system, Skyrim waypoint markers, and generic quests. At the least, I like that it has more RPG influence than other AAA games that claim to have them with its Monster Hunter-lite elements and an actual HP bar that doesn't just grow back itself.

The writing is atrocious. To name a few, there's Aloy's father's (worthless) 'sacrifice', Brom's side-quest of excellence, Aloy's village hating her in the most petty, childlike way possible, the creator of the Hades program's entire motivation being 'It'd be cool if we could make apocalypses' and that entire part of lore being childishly black and white in general. There's no shortage of stupid contrivances as well, like the villain leaving Aloy's bow right next to her cage, which is made twice as stupid with fake tension by Aloy struggling to reach it when she could grab it by just reaching under a lower bar.

And as one last kick in the balls, it suffers from 'western game final boss' syndrome as well. Nothing's more underwhelming than fighting a generic big robot for your fight then ending the actual threat by pressing a button.

All in all, Horizon's an extremely amateurish work for a game this huge and supposedly professional in scale. The sound, the gameplay, the writing, the animations, it's all pathetically underwhelming or derivative (besides robot dinosaurs). This much shit shouldn't fly in one package.

I'm sorry anon, you need some advanced SJW level mathematics to get that to work.

It is a good 8/10 open world game.

Quests aren't long enough, nor engaging enough to make you care about other characters.

Hunting machines is either too grindy or too boring. It lacks variation. Fighting humans suck. Just snipe headshots them all from afar.

Melee combat is horrible.

On the other hand - despite the game using asscreed/new Tr climbing mechanics they managed to make ledges not so obvious. Which is super fun.

World is varied, you have a lot of choices when it comes to ranged weaponry.

Visuals are very good - and I'm not talking about photorealism but coherent art style.

Still my biggest gripe is that you can't ride sawtooth nor ravager...

It feels like a good 8/10 game but with some less marketing -wise safe options it could be great 10/10.

If only they expended on hunting machines, maybe add climbing mechanics over machines. With longer more engaging quest chains.

I've watched the pre-release leak stream, I've watched many parts of the game, and I got the chance to try it myself. It's a weak, mediocre game that feels like all the decisions were made by uneducated interns with a few kernels of gold sprinkled here and there.

Like I said, HZD is not a bad game.
It simply could have been done better. That was my point all along. The game would have so much better if they limited map information allowing you to discover the game. Like the time you met the stormbird climbing up to the bunker. Great moment there. Or unique bosses. Or better human combat/lesser human combat.

The game was good and left me waiting for more.

There are some balance issues and human combat is ass but in general it is the most polished and complete game this year aside from Persona 5.

The combat is a lot of fun and fighting the robots is always a lot of fun. I put 60 hours in it and platinumed it.

The story is really straightforward and the big "twists" are very predictable but it's still enjoyable. The characters are all pretty standard, they do the job and are fun enough but some of them are pretty forgettable I completely forgot about the black kid for example.

The world is nice to look at and there's a lot of stuff to do.

The platforming is awful but it's a small part of the game. It's entirely brain dead all the time.

I'm excited to see what they do for the inevitable sequel since it sold well and actually managed to compete with a major release like BOTW at all.
