Basically like >>376197090 said, in order to get the most out of crafting, you need to level all eight of the classes and then gear them properly. It's a rather large time and gil investment, so I would wait until you've maxed your first combat class to start. When you do start, be sure to get all of the crafting classes to 15 at least (prioritize Culinarian, Leatherworker and Alchemist in particular). What was wrong with Gaius? His motives were perfectly understandable. He values life, and sees primals as the greatest threat to the world. The inaction of the Eorzean states pissed him off, so he wanted to bring stability to the continent. But he also wasn't willing to throw his men to be slaughtered by primals, so he sat and waited for 20 years while he figured out a solution. Ultima was never even intended to be used against the city-states. He figured they would be forced to surrender peacefully when he brought it out.
