>lose 9 operatives on your first mission
>ufos outrun you left and right
>base defense in january
>on fucking veteran difficulty
is there any game that rips your ass apart harder and faster than x-com?
Probably, a few games do.. X-Com still throws me for loops
>ufos outrun you left and right
>base defense in january
You're playing OpenXcom with aggressive retaliation, aren't you?
>>376191192
Jagged Alliance 2 does that as well.
>>376193443
unless this nightly's broken then nope
i'm pretty sure i know what went wrong though
>shoot down large scout, successfully complete mission
>aliens send another scout, probably on a retaliation mission
>UFO escapes
>they send a battleship in and the mission gets set off as soon as my large radar system finishes being built
if it was floaters i wouldn't be complaining but fug it's sectoids, and they're psi capable
>>376193572
Fuck the Drassen counter-attack, man.
Also fuck tanks with a rake.
>>376194964
Silent Storm ramps up the enemy counts too at a point. Feels like they're endless.
>>376194756
There's an easy solution to base defence you know.
When you see the battleship coming for your base, load everything, aside from at least 50 hi-ex, that you don't need to equip your dudes onto the skyranger
Now, you should have bought at least 50 high explosives beforehand. Arm them all in the equipment preparation screen
turn one get everyone downstairs and away from the gear piles. End the turn.
>cubanpete.mp3
Everything in the hangers should be very, very dead or at least badly wounded. Now you only have the access lift ayys to deal with.
Unless it was ethereals, in which case the sectopods will likely survive the explosions.
But on the upside, most of the psi-attackers are dead!
Congratulations! Now you just have to mop up the rest.
This can easily be done with suicide bombing rookies carrying armed high-explosives, or actual soldiers with guns if you don't like sacrifices.
Don't try this with proximity grenades, you'll just kill any of your own poor bastards who spawn near them.
>>376191192
>Have a few bases built and things going smoothly
>Most of my recruits are surviving each mission with little to no injuries
>Mind control faggots begin appearing more and more
>Soldiers either panic or get mind controlled for a few turns and kill half the squad
>Everything goes to shit
How does one protect against that?
>>376195603
Weed out people with shitty psi.
If you see someone get psi attacked, have them drop their gun and any explosives if possible. The ayys always go for the easiest target.
>>376195089
Machinegun panzerklein a best.
You just spray through walls and anything on the other side dies.
Works like a charm in hallways, too.
>>376195813
I'm not to the point of having panzerkleins yet. Also I hear a lot of people complaining about them in the game all the time for some reason.
>>376191192
You can die on the first turn of Nethack if you're particularly unlucky.
There's even a special message for it.
>>376195929
They're a bit of a pain to deal with, and they do kinda clash with the whole tactical stealth semi-realism tone the game had going earlier.
A little tip that'll make them a whole lot less annoying: the legs aren't bulletproof.
>>376195963
>ADOM
>fuck up character creation
>decide to skip the rest of it
>hold down A
>explode on the first turn
>game over screen tells me I scored a shitload of points
>wut
Turns out A is a hotkey for alchemy and apparently I ended up mixing something so volatile it killed me and a bunch of people around which was what I got points for.
>>376195510
wew, thanks
i'd be complaining more but turns out one of these sectoids has a blaster launcher
>>376196957
I had a landed battleship in January while playing Final Mod Pack, shit was pretty cash.
Except it was sectoids as well, so I lost 5 guys or so but all dat sweet loot was completely worth it.
Also there were no cyberdisks which are basically indestructible in FMP with starting weapons.
>>376196957
Trust in the high explosive.
High explosives are your friends.
Seriously, they work on anything that isn't a sectopod and have a big AOE.
>>376191192
FTL
>>376195510
It's also worth noting that in the Final Mod Pack, you can use incendiary grenades and not risk blowing up any of your gear!
It'll be a bit slower and less effective.
For maximum fun, use a mix of land mines and incendiary grenades.
>>376197336
Eh, Cyberdisks go down to high-ex and heavy rockets just like in vanilla.
Sniper rifles can also dent them, though not very effectively.
>>376195510
>suicide bombing rookies
absolutely unethical
>>376195089
>That webm
Quit playing on easy mode.
A pistol shouldn't be giving that kind of damage, you shouldn't be getting a perfect streak of interrupts, and the AI shouldn't be so predictable
>>376197646
They knew what they signed up for.
Probably.
Maybe.
...Anyhow, they're dying for the sake of humanity, and they're heroes for that.
>>376197439
While the RNG can be cruel, if you think FTL is hard you have clearly not played more than 10 minutes of Xcom.
>>376197838
It's not my webm. I was just looking for JA2 webms and found it.
>>376197580
HE's don't work when they're flying around like faggots which they do all the time ffs.
>>376197938
i stopped playing before the final mission
Dominions and Conquest of Elysium especially are brutal on you. Most roguelikes as well.
>>376197336
pretty sure i shot down a battleship in january
took hours of save scumming, that shit was actually physically painful
totally didn't do it on beginner
>>376197437
i've got one soldier left alive with a high explosive
so i'll put my faith in blowing shit up with rockets instead
>>376197981
That's a good point.
If there's a nearby roof or balcony on the same level, you can kinda make it work, but the rocket launcher is the go-to anti-cyberdisk weapon for most of the game.
Dem buns tho
So what do you guys think about Phoenix Point?
