Okay so this one's pretty old. Played Duke Nukem 64 at my neighbors house all the time. I forget what level it was but there was like a moon cave. I hid out in it for a while. My name is Jason. He found me in the cave and I started to RP. Said I was a ravenous monster "Baby Jason" he would try and calm me by throwing in treats ( I forget what it was) but I would constantly lash out and kill him before the job was done. Then he tried using a Holo- Duke to talk to me instead still failing to calm the beast, but I would venture out and find the source and return to my lair. Finally he sealed me in with laser trip bombs until another buddy came over and he treated me like a zoo animal until I was finally killed for my hide.
Another time we were playing on Piracy. He knew where the DumDums were and I didn't so he would constantly rule me on that level. After so long of constantly collecting the DumDums and jetpacks he took hold of the pirate ship ( I'm pretty sure that's where the ammo was) and claimed he was the Captain Scootman a pirate after the booty ( his name is Scott) and that I was the weak native people of this land. He slaughtered me mercilessly.
He also introduced me to Ultima Online. One particular character was named Shadow whose skills were modeled after Shadow from Final Fantasy. He was a thief in a guild called "Ninjas with colored shoes" before patches nerfed tons of things and changed the game you could stealth and people wouldn't be able to run through you without losing all their stamina so they would make an invisible wall of people on a bridge in Buccaneer's Den ( a town of thieves essentially). They would wait until someone tried to cross, all un- stealth and steal everything from the victim including their weapons disarming them with wrestling.
Another time I watched as the game held an event with a named character "Lord Britain" leading the charge against an undead scourge. He put on his most valuable armor to fight along side him.

I just started Tabletop gaming this year, after strictly only vidya and board gamin'.

I'm involved in two D&D campaigns, one that meets weekly and another that meets monthly, and then I run a Star Wars Edge of the Empire campaign with some friends, one of which is a vidya youtuber.

This is his character sheet. It always seems to get some laughs from /tg/, so maybe /v/'ll like it.

I've always been a really good jew in MMOs, regularly playing the market and becoming rich. I hit the gold cap on my main server and decided to try and become a king jew on a roleplay server.

To achieve this I made a gnome and started busking for my starting capital. I was a street peasant who, for 10 silver, would write a song about a topic of the customer's choice. I'd already taken a look at the auction house and I felt that the cloth market was one I could crash and then take advantage of, but I only made it to 4 gold from busking before I got bored and deleted the character.

That is the extent of my RP experience.

There was the odd annoying pvper in the wild, but general procedure was to gank them (both sides) if they fucked with players in a meaningful way. The way we explained it was that they were "rogue warlords" or "bandits" etc.

RP opportunities were obviously varied, with Rome having far more "diplomatic" or "civil" roles like traders and whatnot, while Barbarians had survival ones like gatherers, hunters, etc.

In Rome you got paid, basically, in a fake currency that we kept track of site-side. Currency let you get better jobs and ranks and stuff.
We had plenty of people who just wanted to rp in general, so they would go to inns and shops and buildings and just rp it up, and just treated the soldiers as guards and so on.
Military wise the pvp was top tier, and there did feel like an element of strategy as we tried to get zones of control north of the wildy.

Autistic as all hell, I know, but it was fun.

With Barbarians it was generally a case of trying to prove yourself to one of the chiefs or high-chiefs, which would eventually net you your own raiding party.

Long story short, you joined Rome if you wanted to rp or be a bit autistic, and you joined Barbarians if you wanted to hang out with a horde and pvp all day while roleplaying.

I've been reading and writing heavily all my life, and playing video games too, so naturally I've been to almost every video game roleplay community there is.

Something that's tragic is that none of them, including those which call themselves 'serious' or 'text-heavy', actually are focused on writing and character development. Almost no one in these 'serious' roleplay communities knows how to write, most of them can't even make a grammatically correct sentence. They don't try to begin with.

The focus is on creating a sort of pseudo-Facebook social chat experience. The characters created aren't sleeves worn for a narratively interesting purpose, they're extensions of the player's ego. And as an ego extension, the player attempts to frustrate any aggression against their character (and by proxy, against them) at all costs. The result is that there are no antagonists in these communities, ever, or maybe there are antagonists but they never engage in meaningful, harmful antagonism which might have narrative consequences. The narrative experience is a bunch of characters (mostly lesbians) sitting around making smalltalk, forever. There's the occasional lump of drama which results at the most in someone or other getting shot, but always in the shoulder or leg or some other harmless area. That's the extent of the conflict.

There is also a weird political thing going on in a lot of these communities, where cliques of players form and try to take over the community. For example, in Baystation on Space Station 13, furry players tried very hard to take over the server and impose their will, but ultimately failed and started their own offshoot server. Another example is in Taco'n'Banana's Half Life 2 roleplay. There the metropolice faction took over the staff team and implemented all kinds of metropolice-favoring rules and conventions, to the point where if you look at the playerlist, generally more than half the server population will now be metropolice.

I once roleplayed Escanor from Seven Deadly Sins as a Paladin.

I was new to RP and didn't really know how to do it, so I decided to go with something I knew. Which was my favorite character from a manga I was reading at the time.

I stayed for a while, when I found a good enough guild, I didn't join because there were some weird ones in the guild, but there were some I made friends with. But man, a large portion of WoW RP is really awful.

A lot of people ended up hating me, and trying to kick my ass in duels because I was going full Escanor (Super Prideful) and they didn't like it. Luckily this was back when Paladins were broken as fuck and could literally insta-kill.

The SS13 Colonial Marines server can be really cool when you don't get paired up with complete idiots and the admins keep their cancer to themselves.

My favorite round was one where the bartender decided to turn the whole place into a pirate-themed pub, got me a costume, and started chugging drinks made with Uranium with me.
