I've never seen anyone call it bad.
IMO, Crash 2 is all around just a more polished cohesive game to me, relies more on its level design than on gimmicks like Crash 3
That and for whatever reason out of all three, Crash 2 looks the best to me by far.

Nothing in the game is actively aiming at you. When I say you can walk around the enemies I literally mean it.

Having replayed and 100%'d the trilogy in order recently, i was disappointed in how much the second and third game felt like tutorials to the first one. Its difficult, non gimmicky gameplay alone easily proved it as the best game for me.
