The events of Wolfenstein 3D, someone breaking into the Fuhrer's bunker to kill him are acknowledged in game. Hitler is "alive," but in-game descriptions imply that he's a revenant kept alive by occult means or Ancient Jewish science tech.

Wolfenstein New Order got a lot of acclaim because it openly defied genre convention when everybody was getting tired of the overly cinematic stuff.

Wolfenstein '09 is like the inverse, it's a desperate cry for relevancy. There's a sandbox HUB that serves no real purpose besides padding and despite having a persistent arsenal instead of a 2-weapon limit it really feels like a product of its time, where everybody was obsessed with figuring out COD.

It's a functional game, but it's nothing really worth writing home about, or mentioned in the same breath as games like Return or New Order.
