Route B is A from another perspective. The first few main quests are the same with little bits of new content but from then on it's new stuff. The side quests are all either new to B or ones from A you did not complete.

Route C is entirely new content. D and E are just different branches of C, which can be completed in under 10 minutes thanks to the chapter select function that completing C unlocks.

I'd just like to say that this is a fantastic time. Had no idea the gameplay was so similar to Automata. Weiss playing so similar to the pods. Though, weiss seems primary in original Nier while pod plays secondary in automata. Vice versa for sword play.

Just got to Facade. Papa Nier is lovable. So is Kaine. Equally great sound track.

And I like the combat a lot contrary to all the people I saw who said it was bad. I enjoyed the shit out of it since the opening fight in the snowy ally.

Again, surprised and enjoying how much of original nier laid so much of the base for Automata. Automata is really a proper sequel.

I loved the game, but how? She was so bland during Route A/B. It's funny how you liked the characters more, as this was easily Taro's worst game character wise, while I found it was his best in terms of themes and the use of the medium. His best overall story is still Nier though, as it doesn't sacrifice its characters for the themes, something I felt Automata was highly guilty of

Like I said, the original Nier told its story well while still keeping the cast interesting and highly likeable. They spent too much time working off the 2E reveal, which caused 2B's characterization to suffer. While she does become more interesting in retrospect, it's not enough to warrant a second playthrough, whereas in Nier the twist completely recontexualizes the game

I think it also plays into emotions around her death; she just starts to become more open with her emotions leading up to it. Her last words are literally the first time she openly refers to 9S by his nickname.

Really? I thought A2 came off as the weakest character because it felt like the game didn't spend enough time on her story. The reason I liked 2B so much is you could start to see the conflict between the orders given to her by command, and the self guilt she started to have when it came to what she was doing to 9S. I didn't like her in the beginning either but by the end of her story she came off as one of the more memorable characters in Nier.

I'm not sure if I can agree with that. The ending was definitely very good and powerful, but it also felt highly cliche and formulaic in some parts as well as ham-fisted. For instance I think that having small Shades drop coloring books was a retarded and way too obvious move that early in the story. The "reveal" at the end that Shades were human was no reveal at all, the game wasn't foreshadowing or dropping subtle hints as much as it was beating you over the face with the whole "Shades are human" idea for the entire playthrough. The entire setup with Beepy felt like the stars had aligned with the purpose of injecting tragedy into the story and the whole wolves vs. Facade conflict also lost a lot of weight since wolves directly aggro and attack you. Was I supposed to feel bad for killing wolves which run at me and attack me?

Also the individual arcs for getting Verses or key fragments were generally OK, but the entire setup of "gather the magical items" was lazy and cheap. And it was used fucking twice, holy shit.

This would all be generally forgivable if the original was a thematically-focused game like Automata, but it uses the actual plot much more heavily to deliver its message compared to Automata. The plot in Automata is more of a showcase of the game's themes.

Don't get me wrong though, I loved Nier's story, I'm just not sure I can agree about it being better than Automata.

Worst is a bit strong of a word. Perhaps, just not as strong? Tubii took until C to really bloom from generic kuudere to something special. However, 9s was the real star of the show. From the start I liked how pleasant he was and seeing him slip made me keep picking his side until I couldn't anymore.

Nier Autobots tried something different which, while is expected of Taro, could have been handled better so it's not as slowly paced. The other games just have everyone's brand of crazy set on display immediately- which would make C onwards not as interesting.

Adam and Eve's mental states are just right there to see, traditional to the games perhaps. Maybe that's why I favor them so much.

2B's characterization in-game was a big missed opportunity. Just the "Memory Cage" and "Memory Thorn" side stories found in the world-guide adds a ton of depth and impact to the charter. Unfortunately you have to go out of your way to find translations of the supplemental material, which most people aren't going to do. Would have been better if it was included somewhere in the game.

That's another one of my problems, Automata relies heavily on side material not featured in the game to give its characterization. Nier and especially Drakengard both effectively flesh out their characters without the need for supplemental material, something which could not be said for Automata. What is it now, a stageplay, a concert, a strategy book, and two novellas? It's not like that stuff is purely supplemental like what most of Grimoire Noir was, most of the info featured is critical to understanding the characters better

I definitely agree with that, while it opens up a lot about 2B's characterization throughout the game and why she starts off so cold and various quirks like clenching her fist aboard the space station after the prologue, I didn't see nearly as much with 9S or if he even was aware of the previous 9S executions (in-game at least, I've heard some of the supplementary material delves into that).

Automata is interesting in that it either sparks a fire inside of you, or you just don't give a fuck and hate it. Route B is arguably the worst section. However, the game is short enough that I implore you to finish ending E. If you still think it's trash you have the option to convey that message directly to other players in-game. The final message system allows for some very negative comments, including "You're trash" and "shitty world, shitty game". I found that to be very amusing.

They had a live show during which the dub actors read some short stories, one of which was set after ending E.
The script, which you could buy from SE's website, stated that 2B goes cathatonic over grief from 9S not waking up.
At the live show it turned out it was all bullshit and they both live.
