Zestiria's overworld is well designed. The field areas have lots of details (pastures, ruined towns, rock formations, waterfalls, discovery points), have more topographic variation, and they are usually only one screen long. Windstepping is also really smooth and makes going through areas a breeze. You come across different types of obstacles, which you know you can interact, but just not right now, almost like a Metroidvania. It builds up anticipation when you finally get the power to cross that gap/break that rock. The way the obstacles are placed are also very intriguing. I remember being giddy at Biroclef Ridge (I think), where there is this tunnel that is blocked by rocks (and ogres, holy shit the ogres inside the tunnel really gave me some sense of dread). You can see from the outside that the tunnel leads to an elevated platform, which just tickles your curiosity a lot more.

Berseria, on the other hand, has mostly empty fields with little variation in detail and there's not much to find. They are also huge and multiple screens long which sucks until you have free use of the warp bottles and points. Even then you still have to really know the world map if you want to go somewhere not on the warp list. The rheaboard is super slow and IMO feels kinda mushy to control, compared to windstepping. The colors tend to be undersaturated and dull inside dungeons and some fields, which fits the mood of the dungeons but isn't very interesting to look at. The music is also pretty lackluster which doesn't help. I loved the characters and story, but had some serious burnout on most areas after completing Berseria twice. I would load up the game, start running through any field, and just think "nope" before shutting it off. I wish they had a map with enemies spawning in the towns because those were nice.

I was impressed by how all four shrine tracks actually have the same primary theme, just remixed in very clever ways. Zestiria wasn't even the worst Tales of game but it was definitely a step down in quality considering it's core battle system was a watered down and slower Graces. I will say that this would be the perfect time to start porting the games we didn't recieve around the PS2-era. Most notably, Tales of Destiny Remake. Everyone loved Tales of Graces' battle system but at the same time they have no idea that Tales of Destiny Remake birthed battle systems such as Graces, Xillia 1 & 2 and so on and is still the best of all of those.

That's funny because the series wasn't evolving for a long time and still isn't.

The last great Tales was Destiny and ever since then its just been sub-par. At least these past couple of Tales has tried to add something to the franchise but I'd rather they fuck off from trying to force it.

Keep the hi-ougis, keep summons, keep ydrassil, but don't force shit like character fusions and fusion attacks. Use 1 character for that not an entire franchise. This is why Graces was slightly better than Xillia and Zestiria in that regard. Yet Berseria managed to do basically rival Tales of Graces.

I've been playing the Tales series since Symphonia and I think the main problem with the series is that Namco is releasing too many of them too frequently, and that they keep trying to reinvent the wheel by fucking up the battle system.

The battle system (and the graphics) was getting better and better until it was perfected with Vesperia, then it started to go downhill. The characters and story started going downhill as well. Lloyd, Luke, and Yuri were all very unique characters that had amazing voice actors and grew and changed dynamically over the course of their stories. Jude/Asbel/any new Tales protag are all basically interchange. They don't have much personality and mostly just act as an excuse for the player to have a character that conveniently gets drawn into the events of the plot to get things started. Basically a McGuffin character.

I think Namco needs to give the Tales series a break for a several years, maybe 5 at least to work on their engine and give the developers and writers time to come up with something really amazing, engaging, and fun.

I enjoy Zestiria a lot. Characters are really simple but that appeals to me in a retro 80s kind of way. I enjoy incorruptable LG paladins against unambiguous big bad evil villains. It's not a complex story and it doesn't have complex characters but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable.

Combat is a little more simplistic than I'd like, but it's a JRPG, at least it isn't turn based.

I honestly don't understand why it's hated. It's mediocre in basically every way.

Unique I can agree with, but you seem to remember him pretty well. Therefore he is memorable even if not unique. He wasn't very complex though.

Equipment and all that was so convoluted, it's a shame cuz the battles were a button mashing combo making funfest. I even had my fill of playing as all the characters.

And I agree about the soundtrack a lot of the temple songs were hype and had me running through the dungeons.

Also the overworld was pretty , even though meaningless once you could fast travel.

But by far this games worst problem was the AIR. My teammate AI sucked. Almost every boss fight on hard or above was a solo fight as they would just run up and die. And also armatization was so unreliable because you would switch control to another character for two seconds and they would armatize dearmatize and rearmitize, just sitting out blast Guage. Also they'd sit around like fucking retards if they weren't in the right form. And God forbid we all try interrupting the magic users. The majority of the time they'd use the wrong art simply speeding up the cast time of the spell. I realized these flaws once the game started to get hard so I just made a beeline for the ending, fuck doing anything extra in this game.

Sorey and Mikleo were already planning on leaving home even before meeting Alisha and Sorey was chosen as the shepherd when he was born. The adventure was always going to happen regardless of whether or not they ran into Alisha.

Sorey still would have been forced to grow because of Cardinal Forton, in fact they've literally done this before and it worked exceptionally well.

And I don't like Rose much. Even if Dream Slasher is overpowered.

If there's anything I appreciate in Zestiria over Berseria, it's that I liked the selection of music for the costumes better.

The only one I really liked in Berseria was Magilou's Arche costume for Tales of Phantasia's theme.

The Arrow was Shot just felt really fitting for the atmosphere of Zestiria. And I like the song a lot too.

So outside of using fusion, because that's obviously the most overpowered thing to use, which characters did people use the most? I personally used Edna the most, then Mikleo, then Lailah. Everyone else was whatever. I just liked how they played. Fuck Lailah's solo gauntlet though, that shit was annoying.
