Because it feels complete in a lot of aspects and, in my opinion, the best gameplay out of From's Souls games. Going into DaS3 felt like such a downgrade and that they should have taken a few more notes from BloodBorne in a lot of areas.

Combat's decent, 6.5/10 overall. Boss fights are the best part, just like the Souls games. The weapons are extremely over the top and cool, the DLC is a real treat for this (the beast cutter is pretty magnificent).

The aesthetic dimension is where the game shines, and for me that aspect is a 10/10. It's just this insanely interesting world that's rewards players that are imaginative, but you also need to be capable of just letting the sight of something like a fucked up tree or face freak your feelings out a bit.

The visual design is insanely loaded and busy, but there's a ton of subtlety encoded in everything (such as the pillars in Yahar'gul, where they're all misaligned and broken up, how the pebble item resembles both an eye and a moon, how the trick weapons are almost like different styles of critical thought for fighting "inner demons", so on). There's a shit ton of juicy parallels and overlaps shoved absolutely everywhere. The more imagination you bring to it, the more the games absolutely loaded storytelling stares back out at you.

Just to add to my post, Dark Souls has lots of cool subtlety too. My feeling in DKS3 was that the 4 different elements are like archetypes of human spirituality: fire represents instinct and that warm elemental feeling of being alive, sorcery is elevation through logic and models and that blue-sky feeling of wisdom, lightning/faith is the whole dimension of excessive religious belief and the electrified feeling of that world. The dark I'm not sure of because it has a big overlap with humanity, but it's like the experience and embracing of the nothingness that encapsulates your life. I don't know if any of this is true, but it's one of those games that, symbolically speaking, is pretty radiant.

I held off playing it until late last year because I thought it looked like shit. The recovery mechanic seemed like a dumbed down, casual-oriented way of making combat far easier and I wasn't interested in the whole werewolf thing. It just really seemed like a shitty game to me.

I was so fucking wrong and it's now easily one of my favorite games of all time, I've put like 500 hours into it already and I just keep coming back every now and then.

Early game I realized I had killed tons of enemies, hadn't seen a resting point in well over an hour, was full health, and still had near 20 healing items on me.

It wasn't game ruining just very different from early game dark souls where you just have a few heals and every fire you got to felt like an accomplishment.

It's not easy at all dude and I've beaten Dark Souls. It's too hard to really enjoy for me at least. I've summoned for almost every boss fight or looked up speed runs to get strats to beat bosses. I like dark souls gameplay and Estus system way more. And I don't care for Victorian settings.

It's quite good. The setting is interesting, the weapons are varied, atomsphere's top notch, the story is more fleshed out and frankly better than any other Souls game, and it's unique. There are virtually no other games that do eldritch horror so well while being challenging and as interesting. Add to that fantastic music and great multiplayer and it speaks for itself.

More importantly is when the game came out. We're surrounded by very bad games that hold your hand and are bland and uninspired. Games that are focused on graphics over substance and this beats in both categories. It's as close to a perfect game as we're likely to get.
