That was the problem. It made what had been a decent story up to that point feel like a cheap waste, since her early death gave the plot some gravity.

Yeah I just feel the good far outweighs the bad, especially because enough time passed that the characters had to cope with her death while learning and growing from it, and the drama resulting from her sudden reappearance gave Shulk and Dunban extra development and tightened their bond. And of course Melia's arc of realising she's already lost to the childhood friend before she met Shulk was great.

Don't act like saying blatantly wrong things is an argument that warrants "rebuttal".
Xenoblade was hugely popular as far as JRPGs go, that's why Shulk is in Smash, not the other way around. Considering that Final Fantasy games are barely JRPGs anymore, it's no a stretch to say Xenoblade was the most well-known JRPG in recent years.
You might have been confusing it with Xenosaga.
