I think a part of it is that some people really want to believe there's tons of good games out there. If you're a chronically bored idiot, you may actually be so fixated on this idea of having "so much to do" that you naturally become less critical of the games themselves (in order to counter the insecurity engendered by the meaningless in their life). Why elevate your taste and be more selective when you risk tossing out this comforting impression?

I think this thinking is why people blow so much time watching playthroughs of games and other nonsense. It's the fact that there's 40+ hours of "fun" playthrough footage of some gay youtuber that is a comfort to them, and the material itself doesn't even matter as much as resolving that insecurity does.

Indie games are mostly shite because it's always a small team working on it, being created in their own time. There are COUNTLESS indie titles that are amazing games and there are it's fair share of shit as well.
