That's why I love it. Having everyone stuck together in one last adventure... it feels like a proper send-off. Plus it's not afraid to get really sentimental and unlike in other RPGs these sentimental moments feel earned after 150+ hours of baggage.

Am I correct in deducing that there's an overarching theme of duty versus freedom in these games?
There's Kloe and Cassius in SC, Kilika and Julia in their doors, they have all had to take up responsibilities they didn't actually want for the sake of duty.
If my hunch is correct, Kevin and Rufina also count but I've only just finished chapter 3 so I'm unsure of their circumstances.

I'm in grimsel fortress, is there a way to get the night goggles before the first 'dark' hallway? I'm trying to go through the whole game without fleeing (so I can get that special quartz) but I can't get pass the enemy in the dark hallway, and I am forced into an encounter where I can only flee. I know there's night goggles in the two rooms after but I can't make it.

The Trails series is grounded in creating a believable world out of the fantasy setting. Objectively, Olivier giving them the Courageous is unrealistic. As has been pointed out, Olivier acts silly, but makes decisions with a rational purpose in mind. Giving a bunch of kids a warship on the hope they use it well is plain stupid.

Obviously having the airship let the kids help end the war. The writers made it that way. The writers can do whatever they want. A magic fairy could have shown up and gifted them all nukes to end the war or whatever. That doesn't mean it's good writing.

Sky is pretty different compared to Cold Steel in that Estelle and Joshua were much better poised to make change. Sky's party is by far the strongest out of all the games. Joshua is already an enforcer, and by the 3rd, you have real powerhouses that can contend with the strongest in Zemuria. The story in Sky made sense, helped by the fact that Sky actually took a lot of time to develop the plot (which is why some people complain about FC pacing). Bracers in training slowly travel and solve problems. The people that surround them as they travel are very powerful. The MC's sweetheart is also very powerful. They have the capability to make change happen, so it makes sense for Olivier to put faith in them. In Cold Steel, the only ones even close to FC/SC Estelle would be Rean, Laura, and Fie. And no one comes close to Joshua except Rean with his demon energy/Gundam. Why would you give them the Courageous?

I was talking more in terms of how they can influence those around him. Estelle obviously wasn't that special, but she was hard headed and didn't give up, which in turn brought Joshua back.

My idea is that he thought the class's involvement was probably important into what was going to happen. Maybe not in raw power, but in their influence.

Both Liberl and Erebonia seem somewhat appropriate for countries that only recently started industrializing themselves, but Crossbell is this cyberpunk metropolis that's like 200 years ahead of the curve. That whole Door is fascinating because of what you learn about her and the other students, and Lechter. Key detail I learned is that Klaudia never even knew her parents, probably because the airship crashed when she was still with a wet nurse in Grancel. It's funny how she took a long time to escape her circular thoughts and comforts, at least by FC, since her distant ancestors struggled against the Aureole which functioned to provide those same thoughts and pleasures.
