Knowing how to work around leitmotif is actually the opposite of lazy or lack of ideas.
Some SMB3 tracks are new arrangements of old Mario music though. The underground music in SMB3 is just the same as in SMB1 with a new arrangement.

the tanooku suit is the same as the leaf with an extra useless power most people never use
the frog suit is useful in what, 2 levels?
the wing just serves to make the tanooki suit useful
the boot is just a shittier version of yoshi
