Letting go of Lotus Juice was a mistake. P5 has a lot of good tracks, but it equally has a lot of uninspired garbage that has alarming tells of Meguro being burned out/phoning it in. Plus most of the battle themes don't have any "oomph" too them, they are too slow tempo to get the blood pumping. Give the fucking guy a break Atlus and try someone new.

Ryota Koduka is not new, he did the June's Theme from Persona 4 and Kenichi Tsuchiya did the Persona 2 OST as well as some of the best tracks from Nocturne.

P4's battle theme was awesome victory lap lap music when you're kicking the enemy's ass across the floor, but doesn't fit quite as well when you're the one getting your ass kicked.

P5's is great in either scenario because it's about being overconfident in your own abilities to take down your opponent and can be seen from either perspective.

My opinion is that the battle themes are all pretty equivalent in quality, so what it comes down to from there is the background music. P4 has a weaker ost standing alone simply because it only fits with the game's more lighthearted tones. P3 had a lot of similar instrumentation which made BABY BABY BABY pretty alright since it didn't stand out too much from the rest of the usual music. P5 is pretty jazzy and while I can't get A RIVER IN A DRY LAND and Last Surprise out of my head little else actually stood out background-wise. As another anon pointed out, the background music was ambient, and while it fits with P5's ost through and through (like most of the other games' osts do), as standalone tracks P5's non-battle music is lacking. The only gripe about the battle theme in 5 was the introductory riff just because of how "abrupt" the transition into the lyrics was, in P3 we have the BABYBABYBABY and then lotus juice "revving up" before actually beginning the song, P4 has that riff that builds up the instrumentation as the lyrics take over, P5 has that strong jazz start-up but it's replaced by obscenely calmed lyrics, however while the heavy up-and-down tone of it makes it difficult to really get into at first, it really makes the stronger-sung lyrics stand out. Also Persona 3 and 5's have a particular issue where if the song has no lyrics the melody is completely shit.
