Ok.
I'm practicing sandwiches alongside GTR, and I'm running into a problem.
GTR is supposed to be easy to continue chaining to the second floor.
But, if you look at pic related, there's literally only one color I can use if I don't want to build purely vertically. Which is green. Otherwise, red kills the chain, blue kills the chain, and yellow kills the chain.
Anyone have any advice for me? If not, I'll just keep trying to build vertically, but this seems not so great.

Do something like this. I used the most risky-looking colors to demonstrate the freedom that you actually have with colors here. The only thing that wouldn't work is if you tried use yellow for what is the red sandwich on the second floor, and of course using reds instead of the blues in column 1.

Im no expert but I think you need to be careful about the order in which you build GTR/color choices to make sure you dont run into some issue like this that delays the transition, which would lead to a buried trigger. Or be japanese and play blindingly fast.

That it may, but you don't need to get all of them at once. With puyos that wouldn't help in building the transition, you can still set up other parts of the chain extension like so (everything in pic related on the second floor that isn't scribbled out).

Also note that it's not explicitly necessary to have EVERY single piece contribute to building your chain. If, say, it throws you two pairs of green-green puyos in a row that you just don't have a use for anywhere, toss 'em somewhere and let them pop themselves.

This is a good point, though... it would be dangerous to build too much around it that your transition gets buried.

I'm not an expert myself but I believe the best course of action is to chain your transition up to the second floor ASAP, but also try to start constructing chain extensions when you aren't getting pieces you need for the transition. It is much easier said than done, I know.

Yeah, that's pretty much the conclusion I've come to.
One issue I just ran into is that tossing an extra puyo here and there causes me to eat my chain.
That's why I was looking for an easier, less color restrictive way to make the transition so I don't have excess garbage.

Additionally, a possible safety measure is to split the first chain on the second floor using the same color that you're using for the transition. In this case, I mean the single red between the greens on column 1. That way, if your opponent tries to set off his chain early, you can cut yours early like so and have the red piece drop down to your transition instead of having to build more reds to trigger the sandwich, as would be your intention in the "long" version of the chain.

I'm still trying to learn the best ways to chain on the second floor myself. I can do it in theory with the chainsim, but in an actual match, I struggle with non-useful puyos and color conflicts myself. I can only assume at this point I just have to keep practicing until it clicks.

Here's another idea that's pretty simple.
Drop a single green puyo (since that is the only one you can use without any color conflict) and have literally any other color on top.
That should let you continue your chain without any problem.
That way the only piece you are looking for is one with at least one green, which should be much less restrictive than looking for double greens, for example.

I posted yesterday about struggling with level 1. While I am mediocre at Puyo and getting my grips, I do understand the mechanics and can still set up strings neatly assuming junk doesnt rek me.

But Tetris I still cant get a hold of. With Poyo I can discard colours i dont want or need to the side with little consequence.

Tetris it feels like every block counts and if you screw up a line you are done.

Any help?

Play Marathon mode repeatedly and get better.
It's a lot better than trying to practice in VS because it starts you off slow and you can focus on building effectively instead of dealing with garbage as well.
Make liberal use of the hold function as well. If you can't use a piece immediately, hold it until you can.

I'm the opposite of you, decent at Tetris but shite at Puyo, and I see it the other way around, so I think it's probably just based on perspective.

Someone posted this video the other day (https://youtu.be/3xAFDnT4rz0?t=1m51s), and the Tetris player in the second match is so good but still loses. So Puyo, to me, seems like it'd be pretty easy to fuck someone up with a huge chain, while Tetris seems less rewarding since Puyo players can just pop a few puyos and get rid of the blocks quickly.
