What went wrong? We need to talk about this.

Everything went right.
At least this way no one can rape this great franchise.

>>376135742
Game was amazing. A remake or a sequel would fucking ruin the whole thing.
>>
I'm sure we'll see a rerelease someday. System Shock was stuck in rights holder hell for over a decade and now we're seeing both a remake and a new game. I'd rather Monolith make a new FEAR before a new NOLF however.
>>
>>376135742
A few years back Nightdive tried to get everything lined up to allow for preservation of the game.
The rights holders wound up fighting over who owned it and sank the whole thing.

One of the best arguments for shorter copyright terms on computer software. You don't keep it in print and able to run on a modern system, you don't get to keep a claim to the rights.

Its a shame, but we're probably going to have a lot of software in the same boat in the next few years thanks to the Windows 7 EOL and Windows 10 going walled garden.

>Considered one of the greatest FPS games of all time during release
Not really. It was solid though.
>>
>>376136040
Second game was fine too, though not as amazing as the first.

I was just thinking about this the other day, specifically that first sniping level and all those typical Monolith NPC conversations about insulting monkeys and whatnot. Does it work on new machines without too much hassle?

I've never played them. Is it like Perfect Dark with a different tone or is it pure shootan'?

Eh, that's not true.

It is an absolutely awesome LAN party game, though. Wonky and completely broken balance included.

For all it's pro-feminism symbolism, I love that Kate Archer was just some chick who just done her job right while looking good doing it. Whenever she was criticised for being a woman, she just rolled her eyes and was basically "Fuck it, I'll just do it anyway" with her gung-ho attitude.

Not like this nu-century feminism bullshit I keep seeing in modern games.

It works pretty well. Only problem is getting it to work with modern resolutions. Either you could play vanilla and have it be stretched, or use a widescreen fix that would cause a couple of bugs with some weapon animations during reloads. But maybe that's just because of my resolution, I think I saw some people having it work fine.

/v/, I have to confess. I bought system shock from GoG and updated it with patches, but game was too janky, out dated and slow for me to get into it. I played for about 4 hours then put it down years ago.

Old games are good, and they age fine, but they still age. Modern games have spoiled me with flashy menus, and easy to understand descriptions that doesn't need tons of trail and error to get the niche aspects right.

It was "good", not "great" like FEAR 1. If Fear 1 is a 9/10 Fear 2 is a 8/10. Stil FEAR but it lost a lot of what made it special when it transitioned to Console. Lost the unit AI, lost the physics, lost the shadow effects, lost the water effects, lots the open but connected areas in favor of hallways, lost the larger segments with nice sky boxes. FEAR was a very technical marvel of its time and a lot of that sparkle was chipped away for consoles and the real travesty is that it didn't even sell that much better cause of it.

First of all 10/10 doesn't mean perfect, it means really, really good.
Secondly, the idea of "no game should ever be 10/10" is fucking stupid because all that's doing is holding every game up to an impossible standard so they all look worse by comparison

That's exactly the point my man. If a game is to be 10/10 then it has to be universally liked by everyone that played it. Calm your autism my child. The gaming scene is not but 30yrs old, humanity still has multiple chances to create a real 10/10 game.

If you think any game is 10/10, please look to the image on my left and let it sink it. Let it seep, simmer and ferment until you accept it.
>>
>>376154929
>If a game is to be 10/10 then it has to be universally liked by everyone that played it
A review score is a subjective opinion by the person who gave it, or an average of those scores. 10/10 does not mean everyone who has ever played it loved it, it means the person who wrote his this score loved it or all of the people whose reviews are counted in this average loved it. Review scores are not objective universal truths.

There's your problem right there. No One Lives Forever was one of the first games I noticed a disparity between actual gamer reaction and critic reviews for PC games. It was one of the first games that spent a ton of money buying ad spots from gamespot and IGN and the like. I'd wager it wasn't nearly as popular as you remember. I know all of the quake/CS crowd thought it was garbage.
>>
>>376157823
That's because the Quake/CS crowd were multiplayerfags who also happened to hate stealth with a passion, dingus.
>>
>>376136852
NOLF 1 or 2 weren't feminist at all, in fact in NOLF2 Cate is saved by a big super soldier guy

>>376157823

Did you know that being a Quake/Doomfag back then was considered casual? No one care about the opinions of "twitch shooter obsessed ADD morons" back then and CS is literally cancer who cares what Dust II the series fans think.

SP FPS fans loved NOLF.
>>
>>376150941

We all grew up with the 3d Realms games and loved single player FPS. NOLF was scene as a gimmick as it offered nothing beyond cartoony voices and cell shading (which conveniently made it relatively low req upon release).

>>376158134
>Quake/Doomfag back then was considered casual
Quake yes. CS no. CS was considered the most core PC game for years.

>>376136040

Do you consider any game with a female player character to be feminist?

I never got any feminist agenda out of the NOLF games. It does poke fun at US nationalism here and there with a cigar-chomping general, but the whole game is overly humorous.
>>
>>376158458

Must have just been you and your gay little group of butt buddies then mate.

NOLF is fantastic. I mean the first few levels are meh but it really picked up a few missions in, legit one of the best FPS games I've ever played. I'd say NOLF is definitely better than Doom, Quake and Counter Strike.
>>
>>376157184
I'm surprised there aren't more of them. You'd think that the espionage setting with lots of neat gadgets would inspire more games, but I guess not.
>>
>>376158458
NOLF games aren't cel shaded at all, they're just stylized. Also they were considered good, if cult classic games due to how poorly they sold. Some good gunplay and levels overall. Also genuinely funny and lighthearted games, which are an oddity compared to most FPS back then.
>>
>>376158708
It's not mental gymnastics when the majority of the FPS community could be found on those games at the time. And it was much more than one map anon. The games had hundreds of maps. Also nothing I said was false, it WAS one of the first normie tier ad campaigns for PC.

You gonna say it's paid marketting when I say NOLF is one of the best FPS's of all time? Because it is. No one told me to say that. I just thought that naturally after I played NOLF.

>>
>>376159237
You're jumping to conclusions, feminists didn't even care about games back then, and NOLF1/2 didn't really have a political agenda, it was more of Austin Powers in game form but more funny. Cate never has to make a big deal of how she's a female, unlike Bioware and how every gay character has to tell he likes to take it up the ass at least 5 times per conversation.
>>
>>376159318

This. I actually don't even remember NOLF being advertised or shilled at all and I read a lot of games media back then, more than I do now. I only found out about NOLF a few years after it was released.

I miss this game so much.
I would buy it, but it's literally not even possible.
I keep scouring shady flea markets with a faint hope that one day, I would catch a glimpse of this game, before I go hollow.
One of those games that you are perfectly entitled to torrent, in fact torrents are the only thing keeping it alive.

Yeah I know with all those gameplay trackers we had back in the late 90's gauging how many people were playing SP games, the playercount for SP was so much lower than those 3 MP games, oh wait, there was no way to tell that and you are pulling things out of your ass.

Who cares what MP fags thought or played. SP patricians loved NOLF and it's all that mattered. NOLF is regarded as a classic and is still loved today. What point are you even trying to make, that some of your faggot retarded shit taste CS shit twitchy Quake fags friends didn't like a slower paced game with a story and slightly more linear levels. Wow I am so surprised. It must mean everyone else in the world thought that too.

You know Id plebs didn't even like any early 2000's shooter right because they wanted their open MP tier maps in SP games forever. Doom style map design is good but it gets old after a while as well. After the hype of HL1 died down the more linear approach of FPS in the very late 90's and early 2000's was shit over by butthurt Id fags everywhere but who cares about them.

>>
>>376160278
>You think Margaret Thatcher was a feminist just because she was a female politician who called the shots?
In a way, yes. She was the first lady Prime Minister, a feminist accomplishment in its own right.
The whole notion is that females are equal to men. Her opinions on feminism and yours are irrelevant to what her election meant as a whole.
>>
>>376160417
You do realize there were gameplay trackers in the early 00s? And at the top of the list, overwhelmingly was Counter-Strike for years.

This has nothing to do with quality. I'm simply pointing out NOLF being considered one of the greatest FPS of all time is pure revisionism.
>>
>>376160572

Yes because everyone was connected to the internet back then and everyone signed into Steam in the 90's and had always online and had their SP games being tracked for playtime.

Fuck off.

And no, you are wrong. I have a PC gamer magazine from 2002/2003 under my bed with a "top 100 PC games of all time" list in it, and NOLF is listed, though it was in the lower half of the list, it was still listed as a great.

You just sound like a feminist with the inverted signal really, like any women getting the spotlight = MUH FEMINISM, while feminists think women not getting spotlight = MUH PATRIARCHY

reality is more nuanced than that, there are females who despise feminism and communism that shouldn't be lumped with feminists for obvious reasons, crazy huh
>>
>>376160525

I can believe it sold that many over the past 17 years, sure. But it was nowhere to be seen at release. It's simply a cult classic.
>>
>>376160278
Holy shit, just fucking play the game recently and listen to the dialogues. Mr. Smith constantly and explicitly belittles Cate for being a woman and places doubt in her abilities as an operative and she continues to proves his doubts wrong and shames him. If that isn't feminism I don't know what is.
>>

what the fuck am i reading
marxist feminism is an offshoot of feminism. not all feminism seeks to uproot class structures, otherwise liberal feminism wouldn't even exist.

>>
>>376161161
Put on your critical thinking cap, son. The game isn't going to have such a sharp disparity between platforms. .17m vs whatever ridiculous claim someone said earlier. 250 million was it?

All you have to do is provide a source, because I see nothing to back that claim up.

Come. On.
>>
>>376161183
Feminism was always linked to marxism, all the feminist influential writers like Simone de Beauvoir are communists. The idea was to pit females against males in a quasi class warfare system, just like the LGBT activism movement was made to pit homos against heteros, the Afrocommunism was made to pit blacks against whites. That doesn't mean there aren't gays who despite the LGBT agenda and blacks who despise the afrocommie agenda. To think anything female = feminism is to fall exactly into the class warfare trap they want to set up.

You seem to be regurgitating /pol/ generalizations though, mistaking those things happens all the time there, as if all blacks are for affirmative action, ignoring types like Ben Carson and such.

>>376161119
His point is retarded, he equates anything female with feminism, while the latter is a left wing, revolutionary movement. Nobody in feminist and left wing circles even mentions Thatcher as an accomplishment of anything, they'll say she was a witch who destroyed the country or whatever. Mistaking the pawns, that commies want to make of certain groups such as females, gays or black for the agents is dumb.

Monolith was competing with 3DRealms, Id, and Epic in engine development. LithTech was considered the third wheel of game engines in the 90's, but hell if they were going to give up. F.E.A.R. 1 was their breakthrough. Then they got bought out and the talent scattered.
>>
>>376161003

It wasn't PC Gamer itself I said a PC Gamer magazine.

I just checked under my bed through all my mags and it was called PC Games Addict.

Looking through it, NOLF is at number 51. Quake 1 is at 73, Duke 3D is at 81. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is at 39, Doom is at 23 and Counter Strike at 22, Quake 3 is at 10.

>Nobody in feminist and left wing circles even mentions Thatcher as an accomplishment of anything, they'll say she was a witch who destroyed the country or whatever.
Quoth Natasha Walter:
>Thirteen years ago, in The New Feminism, I wrote: "Let's start with Margaret Thatcher. No British woman this century can come close to her achievements in grasping power. Someone of the wrong sex and the wrong class broke through what looked like invincible barriers to reach into the heart of the establishment. Women who complain that Margaret Thatcher was not a feminist because she didn't help other women or openly acknowledge her debt to feminism have a point, but they are also missing something vital. She normalised female success. She showed that although female power and masculine power may have different languages, different metaphors, different gestures, different traditions, different ways of being glamorous or nasty, they are equally strong, equally valid … No one can ever question whether women are capable of single-minded vigour, of efficient leadership, after Margeret Thatcher. She is the great unsung heroine of British feminism."

>I knew that then as I know it now; by the time I left school I was a veteran of protests that resounded to the chant of Maggie Maggie Maggie Out Out Out. We should never forget her destructive policies or sanitise her corrosive legacy. But nor should we deny the fact that as the outsider who pushed her way inside, as the woman in a man's world, she was a towering rebuke to those who believe women are unsuited to the pursuit and enjoyment of power. Girls who grew up when she was running the country were able to imagine leadership as a female quality in a way that girls today struggle to do. And for that reason she is still a figure that feminists would be unwise to dismiss.

Yeah she remembers her as a negative figure still.

I like how in your text she's trying to get feminists to remember her in a better light, because that pretty much proves they want nothing to do with her as I previously claimed.

The fact Thatcher told feminists to fuck off proves that not every woman getting prominence is a victory for feminism, she was a family woman who symbolized the opposite of what those feminist/commie types want for society: stable families.

Some company tried pretty much that. They had announced that they intended to release the games digitally, hoping that the rightful owner of the rights would contact them. Instead, they received multiple letters from different companies that basically said: "So, we don't know for sure if we own those games, but we think that maybe we do. Don't try to pull any weird shit because we are willing to sue just in case". Unsurpringsily, they backed off from the whole thing.

The threat was in regards to making a new No One Lives Forever game and came after the hunt for the IP owner began. In regards to releasing the old games Warner Bros. was cool with it but told them that Activision may have some stake in it and they should contact them. Activision said they don't know their stake, they'd have to find a copy of the contract and they are only in hard copy form filed away in storage and they can't really be bothered digging them up. Night Dive didn't really think it was worth the effort initiating court proceedings that may not turn out in their favor and so dropped the whole thing.
