I don't like using shields. I prefer to flip every time, but it's not possible in areas like Blighttown and Sen's fortress.

I think earlier Souls were designed with shields in mind, there are too many narrow and cramped areas, but later souls definitely seem tailored for rolls.

I doesn't really matter though the best defense is simple circle strafing regardless.

Parrying is a lot easier in bloodborne. You can anticipate te attack away from the enmy then dodge forward and fuck their shit up. Parry window seems bigger in bb for some reason.

After your first playthrough there's no reason to ever use a shield again. You know all the enemy movesets at that point and you should know how to dodge properly. Do something fun instead.

It's based on a player's willingness to make it work, as well as the build in question. Some builds forego medium shields to use Dark Hand for the minimum blocking and other such so that they don't get poked/punished for passive play when their positioning is off.

There's obviously shields that do far better than one or the other, but the whole stigma of having stats correspond to shit outside of your equipment is to put it in the player's position to have them do whatever the hell they want and then - and this is gonna be a real kicker - make it work.

This sort of bunkers down in terms of variety since it's obviously necessary that equipment should be balanced around the stigma of "everything can be used" which really isn't that easy an attainable goal, but hating a player for having a medium shield - especially on a build where they can swap to Crest/Dragon/Balder for benefits against specific types of damage, though that's arguing the player actually utilizes it - is utterly absurd, especially in regards to how the games go.

However, Medium Shields are barebones useless unless you use WA shields in Dark Souls III; it's amazing to me that From things that their countless nerfs of the Caestus is going to change anything about it being the best way to get a parry/backstab on a trade, especially when it still has Perseverance just a small Y > LT press away

Dark Souls 2 PvE is good for heavy knights once you get a shield with 100% physical defense. A lot of areas that give some trouble for light characters are easier for knights but not the other way around.

Shields are for parrying and stat bonuses. If you can wield a great shield, they're also for becoming a tank!

Most importantly, they're for completing your outfit

I've done multiple DS1 runs, but only tried using greatshields yesterday. The Eagle Shield dope af, attacks that would've broken my guard or eaten a big chunk of stamina are no big deal now

Useless in PvP, breaks the combat for almost everything in PvE.
I did a Havel build but with the Great Club instead of the Dragon Tooth in DaS1 and only a couple of bosses and the Hellkite Drake could even make the slightest impact on that damn shield, whilst 50 STR with the GC flattened everything. STR build is ridiculous.

The shield dynamic is probably the most interesting part of the stamina system, so it's a little unfortunate that when you've played the game a few times and turn it into Roll Simulator you don't have to make those kinds of stamina considerations anymore
