Because Sonic is designed to be cool, but he's also cartoonish and disconnected from the real world enough as to not be "realistic cool", which would be off-putting. Sonic somehow managed to strike that perfect balance between the childish cartoon and the adolescent badass. It's for kids, but also not quite; a bit edgier, a bit kewler.

It's that perfect sweetspot that makes autism flourish.

I think all of that is secondary to the fact that the Sonic universe has all of the factors to create a breeding ground for the typical autistic imagination combined with the fact that a Sonic fanfic OC is very easy to conceptualize and express, ie, babby's first fan character. And then for whatever reason they get stuck/invested with this series and have trouble moving on.

I remember the time when I was 10 years old. I had nearly every Sonic game, dvd collection, plush toy, figure, statues and posters. I was an admin of a lot of Sonic sites. However, I was so extremely addicted that I wished for Sonic to be real.
