The game pushed weapon class more than weapon upgrades. You could beat one Ruin Sentinel with 5 hard swings from unupgraded Craftman's Hammer or slightly upgraded Mace.

So you were encouraged to keep and update 3 different weapons with you at all times, which was honestly a good and fun idea. Only problem was since most of the enemies were different kind of knights or armored creatures, Strike weapons were stupid powerful and beat pretty much everything easily. Craftman's Hammer in particular.
