they discovered Early Access is letting them sell alpha/beta tier games at full price and they're allowed to walk away scot-free with the money without any obligation to ever actually push their shitty EA game OUT of EA. In fact it's actually inefficient since they got their money already it would make more sense to just start shitting out a new EA game. Or at least making PAID DLC for a game that's legitimately marked as incomplete and missing features, like the ARKfaggots. Not him but I hate this meme. Images are an evolution of text, movies are an evolution of images and games are an evolution of movies. Having read all the supposed literary "masterpieces" /v/ keeps on talking about, I can guarantee you they do not offer anything more than the best of the best in terms of story centric games. What IS true though is that books have been around for longer, so they had more time to influence later literary works while games with a focus on story have only been around for 24 years at best.

Can someone explain the appeal? It just looks like you can add the circle to Arma and you get a much better game all around.

That is not the case in any medium. Stuff can be insanely popular without being actually critically acclaimed or even good.

Story centric games can be as good as some decent books.
However, the power of imagination cannot be captured, which is why any picture (game or movie) will never truly 'beat' a good book.

And movie adaptations usually just suck because there's a lack of time. You read a book in 10-20 hours. That can never be summarized properly in 2 hours.

Because it's literally the latest flavor of the month. It will have a lot of popularity for a few months, then die down. Just like every other open world/crafting/shooter/multiplayer game has turned out. This one is no different and it will be replaced by the next new thing. These games have become the equivalent of the yearly COD/Shooter, where the casuals are hopping between games just waiting for a new Call of Duty.
