It really depends on how much you use your computer for gaming, and how high you want the graphics settings to be. I built mine for 500-ish and can get 60fps on most games at medium-high 1080p

$1300 to $1600 is the rough ballpark for a decent to good build. I think people here are severely underestimating the cost, especially if you have to buy all the peripherals from scratch (mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers).

If your invested in one or two multiplayer games and just play new games for a while than maybe it is, games like osu! Dota cs fightcade or wc3 or sc.
I have a core 2 duo and i spend all my time on fightcade and osu!mania and for some new games and breathers there are a lot of old games you can play on your pc, and hidden gems just keep on poping, just recently i have found an amazing game called open ttd transport tycoon. But if you do play new games and buy almost all of the AAA games than no its not weird
