And most processing bottlenecks are exponential, not marginal.
So for 99.999% of the tasks your computer performs, especially for gaming, you won't see an increase in performance.
Now if you could quadruple or more your processing speed by overclocking then great, but that's not the case.

I got a bad 4690k.

I can only OC it to 4.3ghz. If I want a higher clock I have to significantly boost the core voltage and I'm not comfortable with that, especially because I'm only using a hyper 212.

No. I can do it without flipping-dipping in the bios now and most chips has a temperature failsafes. I no longer have to worry burning the neighborhood.

The gains aren't substantial enough honestly. A locked i5 with a basic but solid mobo and decent latency 2400mhz ram is 250$, an unlocked i5 with with a solid oc board, huge tower cooler or AIO and the chip will be 400, not to mention you are somewhat required to buy an actually solid PSU for good stability. And all you get is 25% performance boost, given that your CPU is what is bottlenecking you, which won't happen for half a decade with an i5 7500.

It does make a bit more sense if you're buying older 2nd hand because the price difference isn't that big, or Ryzen, as the base clocks are stupidly low on those.

I have a i7 970 and even on stock clocks, aside from fucking E.Y.E there has yet to be a game where I could't push 60 stable
