Automata is first and foremost a Taro rpg. You play it because you want more Taro goodness, not a sequel to MG:R. The combat is a nice little addition but it's not enough to carry the game if that is solely what you want out of it.

Combat is weaker than other Platinum titles but that's because it's a DoD/Nier game, not a Platinum game.

If you go in, go in for the crazy/feels.

Anyone played the DLC yet? Was it worth it?

I didn't enjoy it at all but the combat is still quite fun. It was the one thing keeping me going when everything else disappointed me. If the game had worse combat I wouldn't have finished it.

The combat is pretty weak in Automata. It borrows different mechanics from other Platinum games, but not cohesively. Since it has a leveling system, you can quickly become overleveled if you do all the side quests. Bosses range from "decent" to "what the fuck is this shit?" since it's part of the Drakengard universe.

7.5/10 game objectively.

10/10 if you like feels over actual gameplay

I dont think youll become overleveled if you just do all the quests, i did them all first playthrough and was 55 or something when the end boss was 60 i think. What causes over leveling i found was grinding for chips on my hard playthrough. Im lvl 50 and most of the enememies im seeing are only 40ish.

It's a Taro RPG first and a Platinum game second. I'd give the demo a try, combat might be what catches your interest but it won't be what keeps you playing in the long run. If you're in the market for a focused action game, put this one on the back burner and save it for a rainy day when it's on sale. For 60 bones, it's probably not what you're looking for.

I was definitely level 60+ by ending E. And that was with all the quests done except maybe two or three.

Why were you grinding for chips though? I did the whole game in Hard mode and there's nothing that puts up much of a challenge after the theme park. I made chip upgrades whenever possible, but it mostly just comes down to maximizing DPS and having not-witch time plus invulnerability after taking damage if you really need it.

I was fine with it. It's definitely not the best value out there but it gave me reason to keep leveling up for the coliseum.
