Try the tutorial.
Basically its gradius style - each upgrade costs 1 more powerup. so you collect powerups until the upgrade you want is highlighted then you trigger it, and that's the upgrade you get.

So you need 9 upgrades to get a life? Why not use a simple system where you can choose what you want to spend orbs on instead of sitting on them? More reactive and if you happen to die you aren't screwed into losing them all.
Also it really sucks since you don't gain a life when completing a level in the campaign. Some of those boss fights start you off with a quick cheap death the first time you encounter them. Not like this needs a system like in arcades where they're trying to make money.

There are a lot of ways to increase your survivability. Shields. Armor. Drones. Evasion. I'm happy with 1 life being worth 9 speeds. Also, there are other ways to get lives, and other ways to get powerups.
You don't lose all of your powerups when you die, your weakest ones. So if you have +1speed, +1 spread, and +1 side, you will lose your speed and side. There is an attachment that makes it that you don't lose anything when you die, you get it for completing the pilot training level.

Quickest game is Very Hard Survival. That's like 5 mins.
Full campaign can be almost 1 hour if you make it to the end.

Ya, like Gradius for powerups. Also there is the attachment system, it lets you customize your weapons in some pretty extreme ways. One example is changing your side into a shockwave, or getting an autogun turret, or hanging your plasma into a mini nuke. Also they can be combined for some pretty crazy shit. Checkout the screenshots on the steam page.
As for training, if you've played Gradius you're basically good to go. If you haven't, max your speed and spread first, and don't save your bombs - use them.

Drivers are pretty up to date (two to three months old). The noise was one of the intro sound effects skipping repeatedly. Starting it now still freezes shit for a good minute before working normally.

I'm pretty sure you're the dev now, there's not much reason otherwise to ask that. Plus you kinda confirm here too >376108323.
Nothing specific springs to mind in terms of cause. Lag probably. We'd just finished the second level. I just readied up. Thrid stage started, everything was fine for about two seconds. The game froze for a moment (about 1 second), and then resumed, but there were no players on screen, and enemy waves were just coming in. None of them were blowing up randomly, so if it's a desync, it must've been a pretty bad desync. (Or maybe just a netcode thing.)
On the feedback side of things, couple of points.
>Chat messages
When I send a chat message, please have the input cursor stay in the chat box entry. Most games do this as the default. Continuing my message into a second input made me exit a lobby because the message I was typing included a shortcut key for the exit button.
>Input mode and controllers
Have mouse clicks always be a valid input for online mode as far as the menus go. But if I begin the Ready process with a controller input, disable the keyboard input for UI elements other than chat. Exception can be made for special buttons and modifiers.
>Enemy health and general balancing
This is the wrong genre for grinding down non-boss enemies. Survival wave 3 is the most egregious example. Overall, most enemies should have less health and be easy to kill. You need to consider how much DPS players can output, spread across how many bullets, and player accuracy. Then take those numbers and consider how much enemy health you add with each enemy wave. For some types of challenges, it's appropriate to have tough enemies, but it shouldn't be standard.
>Player count
The number of powerups is probably okay for single player, but for multiplayer, maybe drop more powerups. Similary, enemies can scale here instead of being mostly the same for all player counts.
