Traditional sprite turn-based RPGs are fine because they've got great music, fast transitions to battle and decent stories.

New turn-based RPGs are usually pretty terrible because they try to splice in action and fail at every turn (see: FFXV)

JRPGs from the NES - PS1 era aged horribly in terms of combat. I love Xenogears, but to be honest, the random encounters are not fun, they don't add anything to the story or make the gameplay better. Not really. Very few SRPGs demand more than a basic grasp of the game's mechanics to get by and a lot of SRPGs from non-big name developers usually have severe flaws(see: Hoshigami).

The same stuff with Chrono Trigger or any other JRPG, I simply don't like random encounters, I didn't like them either as a kid and teenager, but I thought "Well, just go through it" because I had barely stuff to play, but as an Adult I'm more than thankful that random encounters are a gameplay decision that died over the years (or was interpreted differently).

I used to hate turn based combat and wish every game like that had full real time combat, then a few years passed and I learned to use my imagination.

Playing JRPGs you probably watch at least some anime right? So when you're playing a turn based japanese game, picture each turn as if it was happening in your animes, fully animated and meaningful. The space between actions isn't really there, everything in the battle is happening in seconds. That's how turn based games are meant to be played, in your mind.
