I hate the meme that books taught in high school are for high school kids. The reason they're taught is because they're both excellent in terms of literary merit and accessible. Protip: the two are not mutually exclusive.

Though they are getting rid of classics in favor of YA in some curriculums, so I guess that's all going out the window.

Ah, so a book about some beta rich guy talking to a beta poorfag for 60% of the plot and then getting cucked and shitted on for the last 40% is that compelling, huh?

Please fuck off. GG has nothing to do with the American Dream - if anything, it just discusses what happens to the people who learn the hard way that the original Dream is dead and they can no longer have their cake and eat it too. If it seriously inspired any writers it'd be numales and literal faggots who endorse that kind of thinking.

But I'm using your fucking words here. You said Gatsby is not about the Dream and then went on to say a few words later that it is about the Dream but not a way of glorifying it, it instead shows the realities of this new time period. This still means it's about the American Dream.

Trying to argue that Gatsby isn't about the American Dream at all is a pointless argument anyway, there's just too much supporting the assertion.

Gatsby intentionally wrote all the characters to be unlikable because he wanted to push his nigger agenda that 't-the rich are evil, gibs me dats' and he was an actual poorfag. The plot never goes anywhere except for the last third of the book when Gatsby decides to man the fuck up and then he just gets killed and that's it. The story is virtually nonexistent, it's a bunch of adults acting like 14 year olds in high school with Gatsby revealing more of his 'tragic' past which I guess the reader is supposed to care for.

There has not been an existent game which has come close to approaching the quality of narrative, characterisation, or general writing of even mid-tier literature. It might happen one day, but it hasn't happened yet.

He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was. . . .

. . . One autumn night, five years before, they had been walking down the street when the leaves were falling, and they came to a place where there were no trees and the sidewalk was white with moonlight. They stopped here and turned toward each other. Now it was a cool night with that mysterious excitement in it which comes at the two changes of the year. The quiet lights in the houses were humming out into the darkness and there was a stir and bustle among the stars. Out of the corner of his eye Gatsby saw that the blocks of the sidewalks really formed a ladder and mounted to a secret place above the trees — he could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder.

His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy’s white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips’ touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete.

Through all he said, even through his appalling sentimentality, I was reminded of something — an elusive rhythm, a fragment of lost words, that I had heard somewhere a long time ago. For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man’s, as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air. But they made no sound, and what I had almost remembered was uncommunicable forever.

>I began to like New York, the racy, adventurous feel of it at night, and the satisfaction that the constant flicker of men and women and machines gives to the restless eye. I liked to walk up Fifth Avenue and pick out romantic women from the crowd and imagine that in a few minutes I was going to enter into their lives, and no one would ever know or disapprove. Sometimes, in my mind, I followed them to their apartments on the corners of hidden streets, and they turned and smiled back at me before they faded through a door into warm darkness. At the enchanted metropolitan twilight I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others — poor young clerks who loitered in front of windows waiting until it was time for a solitary restaurant dinner — young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.

he pops up out of nowhere in the arena of high society throwing extravagant parties, and no-one knows where he came from or how he made his fortune, so the socialites started building him up as this mythic figure and quintessential made-man

the twist is that he's not that great after all. He's just some low-born handiman who was in the right place at the right time, got handed a shitload of money on a whim from a dude with no heirs, had no idea what to do with it, and spent all his days pining for a girl and hoping to lure her to one of his parties rather than just take a short boat ride and go try to woo her

It would actually be better than straight up forcing them to read specific books. If there is one thing i learned about literature is that you do NOT fucking force people to read books because its a really personal thing.

I like the idea of what anons are saying to give students a more of a variety to read from. I think it would be more beneficial if they come out of a class enjoying literature rather than have them write a book report on a book they didn't enjoy in the slightest. I don't know if films really belong in the list. I can't really get a good feel of comparison because a lot of background and most of environment is communicated via picture instead of text. What would LotR: RotK be if descriptions of environment and action were largely removed and it was reduced to just mostly being dialogue? Not trying to reduce the importance of the book, but the comparison doesn't actually tell me much.

The retrospective narrative, despite being necessary, is done in a muddled and confusing way. In the final chapter, it's a muddy mess attempting to follow what/who/when. Nick is a massively tedious narrator. The book glamorizes Gatsby, but he's actually kind of an overbearing asshole to Daisy. I didn't like Daisy either, but I understood why she didn't choose Gatsby. He's an insecure and demanding control freak, and on that not, most characters are vapid, selfish pricks. Last but not least, the setup for the car accident was completely contrived.

Nonsense. Dark Souls has the perception of being super impossibly difficult and one of the best games ever among people who don't play many games.

This fits IJ much better than "wow this is the meme that people won't stop talking about and making me mad" like with your Undertale.

I don't go on /v/ much anymore but my memory of what Dark Souls was for people before the sequel came out feels exactly like how people talk about IJ. >Now, if we put in context the new sincerity shit, neither Souls or Undertale is.
Honestly I don't even know wtf new sincerity is. I only remember IJ pondering on the idea of sincerity, like if you can even be knowingly sincere or not, and didn't really have a clear statement of "this is your new sincerity". THAT's the real meme here desu

Letting kids pick what they want to read. Any reading helps even if its a comic book its better than making them hate reading.

Indoctrination systems only serve to make sure kids hate learning in general. People naturally like to learn and discover, its in our biology. Early school serves largely to destroy that by forcing it down a pipeline.

Some people learn differently and have different interests I think they should roll with that in early education and by the time you get to the harder stuff that requires you to sit down and focus kids may have an idea of what they like and what they want to do one day at least enough to know the hard work part is going to be worth it later.

Now combine that with homework and buses that deny kids sleep and garbage lunch food and this is why kids are tired and fat and don't want to do this shit.

It may be anecdotal but for myself what shot my SAT scores up were fucking Star Wars books teachers got made at me for bringing to class and RPGs I ignored homework for. Math I learned for 3D design as a hobby. Science I got more out of Bill Nye and Discovery Channel. History from BBC documentaries watched later in life. And even more on the arts from Bob Ross.

Learning on your own like that leaves gaps and its not perfect, but its remembered and not thrown away because the only important part was the letter you got on a test. The useful moments in school for me could be compressed into a couple years worth of school usually from the teacher that broke rules to actually be fun and make it interesting. I think I'm not alone in this.

yeah, i agree. but i think to some extent assigning things kids might not like is a good idea. the way i see public school, the point is to effectively throw a lot of shit at a wall and see what sticks. and as time goes on, give kids more control over their classes now that they've been exposed to what they like and hate. some kids might like history some might hate it, but neither would really know if they weren't exposed to it. i had no interest in singing at all up until junior high when we were forced to take a music class. i tried band and orchestra for a semester each, neither stuck. i tried choir the next year thinking i'd hate it and i've stuck with it since and discovered a passion for singing. there's certainly a balance to be struck, but the things you learn outside of school are certainly more valuable.

Kinda, but the issue is delivery.

Its not hey check out these neat things and see if you like it and want to do this for a living one day. That's more old school science shows on TV more than school ever was.

Its hey do this thing for meaningless letters nobody cares about later in life or fucking else you are in trouble.

We never give them that control. Fuck we ask them to decide things in their lives while still making them ask to go piss right up until graduation. It leaves kids not knowing how to function in life because they expect a job later to be filling out forms with memorized facts with little change and lots of structure that doesn't exist when you have to make your own decisions. We piss poorly prepare people to make choices because you don't get any until you turn 18 then you get too damn many at once.

I'm just saying I thought I was stupid for half my childhood for not being able to read well. Then I found books I liked and became the best in my class to the point it boiled down to me and teachers shooting the shit about books later. And even I think most of what they make you read is rubbish even now, went back and read some to check.

Gatsby I will say I liked when I went back. I realized what it was about later on because it wasn't for a grade or to barf out facts.

Now that I can't think of a game for. One I didn't like that became good later. Games mostly go the other way for me when I play them later on.

While I agree with you in principle, it's true that sometimes when a teacher has been going over the same material for decades, they might start to see some things that aren't there. My French teacher, for example, was completely convinced that the baobabs in Le petit prince represented Nazis. While the book was 100% metaphors, to be fair, I highly doubt that's what the author was going for.

yeah, the school system is pretty shitty as is, and it gets progressively worse the further you get into it. i think a good system would be to increase the choice of the kid as they go on, like how it is now where you can't choose any classes in elementary school but you got electives and stuff in high school. pretty much that to a larger extent, the early shit is necessary stuff everyone should know like decimals and shit and in that time you can also see what clicks, then pursue what you like as you get older. learning about something you have a passion for is far more valuable than having calculus rammed down your throat. i really haven't done an insane amount of thinking on the matter, though, i won't ever have a say in the system anyway; not even teachers do.
