I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"

This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." The scene on the bridge is one of my favorite moments of the game.

Clinging to something that is seemingly gone, he realized how much he's changed and finally opened up. The fact that he opened up to a motionless body made this whole scene heartbreaking as fuck but it gave him so much character, it really stuck with me. The track that played during this scene, I believe it was Love Grows really made it even better.

I think it's a good game because of atmosphere, to be honest.

It throws out, at least at the time, a more "realistic" theme implementing realistic towns and cities. A lot of mechanics are digital, such as you earning some of your GFs from computers. I enjoyed that because it doesn't try TOO hard to go overboard. You've still got cars without "LOL FUTURE" floaty shit which is left to the Gardens.

The junction system is actually really fucking cool, especially mixed with the enemy upscaling, but unfortunately it's cheesed easily by use of card manipulation.

The writing kills the game ultimately. The main character is a pussy-ass edgy bitch, and the whole space-goddess-antagonist is some offputting bullshit.

To sum: Good atmosphere, good gameplay system, poor implementation and shitty writing.

Its plot was the (western) public's biggest reason for not accepting it. FF7 was a rebellion story of a rag-tag bunch of heroes. Massive success, made people extremely eager for the next FF. Instead of "whatever" he says "...悪かったな" which is basically "yeah yeah, my bad". He uses it when people criticize him or make fun of him, and it's basically a fake apology to dissolve the situation. In that sense, "whatever" is a pretty decent translation. Rinoa gets super pissed at him for it during the date if you choose the wrong song.
But not every "whatever" directly correlates to each "...悪かったな". There are more whatevers, which means some regular thoughts get translated into whatevers.

Junction certain magic to certain stats. The easiest is ramping up your HP and Str to insane levels so that you're constantly in Limit Break zones still with a thousand HP while you spam Select over and over again until a Limit Break pops up and you ohko everything around you.

Not that it matters. The entire game levels up or down according to what your level is. You can beat the game at level 1 or 100 and the fights will pretty much stay the same, you just get access to cheesier stuff earlier.

Honestly, equipping GFs that junction the stats you want and then hitting "Auto-Junction" is more than enough. Sitting on the beach drawing Water from Fastitocalons or any other magic until you have a full stock and then never casting magic again will beef you up real quick.

It's been a really fucking long time since I last played it but "whatever" is a really human reaction to the situations that an isolationist, introspective person like Squall would have. Everybody keeps putting their hopes on Squall to take the lead and he has to deal with things like killing his matron or fighting the sorceress and the war or being a child soldier.

He doesn't really have much in terms of options, it's not like he has a home that he can go back to. He HAS go to through with it or everything he ever knows or cares about goes away. In the end the best he can do is not think too hard about it despite how introspective he is and just focus on doing his job.

Squall might very well be a well written character but his character might not work that well in the context of a video game.

say what you want about the gameplay(which isnt even bad) but FF8 has probably the strongest production values and art direction out of all the FFs, even the modern ones. excellent character design, excellent graphics and FMVs, one of the strongest soundtracks, and if you dont listen to all the memes on /v/ the story is actually a good one when you pay attention to the important themes presented.

FF8 is the pleb filter of the series and your opinion of this game determines if you are a pleb or not. FF8 is almost objectively good and the best square has to offer. in many ways its even better than FF7. FF7 was the first step Square took into the 3D world. FF8 refined and redefined what a 3D FF game could be. IF you hate this game without good reason, you are simply a unlearned plebian. the most rational of people can acknowledge all the good things it does.

The spells you draw in the beginning give such a small boost to stats you can't even boost yet that there's hardly any point. By the time you get enough AP to learn the spell refining abilities you should have enough enemy drops to make most of the spells you need anyway. If you're playing normally, you level the enemies up to where they have pretty good magic to draw quickly. Assuming you're starting from 0 (as in, no items to refine the magic, no cards to refine the items to refine the magic), drawing is faster by a mile. It only takes 12 draws to get 100, and with all 3 characters drawing that's 4 party turns. People bit onto the "spoony ridicules drawing" meme way too hard and overstate how long it takes.

I went into depth trying to figure out fucking tetra.
Afaik, first number is attack in hex(but within range something like 01= 0-10 ,02=11-20 etc...),then if magical or physical, then defense(also hex,also range), but then it has layer where

All in all, almost impossible to play casually (as in mini game level of dedication), and it would be OK if you had any motivation to play the god damn thing(some weapon or anything), if its your thing you play it,if not fuck it, too much of a hassle for no payoff.

I'm ambivalent towards the story, but I love the game's artwork. I love the architecture, the towns, the character and monster designs (some of Nomura's best work imo), the cinematics, and the general aesthetic of the game. I love how it blends archaic, modern and futuristic art design together in a beautiful way. But I hate the gameplay. I should love the flexibility and customization that FFVIII offers, yet it's way too easy to break the game. I don't like being able to draw and stock/cast magic freely without repercussion. I don't like how the equipment system is worthless due to junctioning (with the exception of Squall). I hate how broken the limit breaks are. Card and item refinement gives you ridiculous amounts of broken items. It feels as though all of its gameplay systems are conspiring to make the game trivial in terms of difficulty when FF games are already easy to begin with.

I feel like FFVII and IX struck a much better balance between flexibility and restraint. In VII, Materia was finite and tied to MP, which meant you had to think at least a little bit, plus it had to be found, bought, or grinded through AP. You didn't start off with broken limit breaks. The equipment system had some degree of forethought and strategy (tied to materia) rather than just being a cosmetic change. In IX, the characters were (for the most part) mechanically distinct, and the skill system (while basic) wasn't broken from moment one. Yes, the games are breakable, but not right away. You gradually become stronger, and it gives the player a sense of accomplishment. In FFVIII you can just fuck the game when you step out of Garden. It's a weird complaint, but I want to be strong at the middle and end of the game, not at the beginning. Yes, I could handicap myself, but I didn't need to do that in order to enjoy the other FF games.

I liked the art enough to beat the game, but my gripes with the gameplay make it hard to do any more playthroughs.

I don't think anyone thought it was a theory. It was told in main story points, not just the opening tutorial computer. They literally talk about it while discussing the orphanage on the Trabia garden basketball court.

It was still retarded as fuck that 17-year-olds who only started junctioning Guardian Forces during important and rare training exercises a few years earlier complete and entirely forgot about their lives as 6-year-olds.

But more to the point, how that was COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to the story. The coincidental fact that Edea, a sorceress and current host of Ultimecia whom they were all tasked to kill, was their orphanage caretaker for about a year or two was the only somewhat relevant and interesting (and contrived) factoid. But they hardly knew her, Cid never talked about her (sorceress), they all forgot and it was just stupid. The fact they all lived together in a Grecian stonework cottage near the sea for like 18 months as kids is utterly pointless and completely retarded, memory loss or not. And that was the only point of that reveal; the GF erase your memory if you use them too much for too long and ohyeaharen'twefuckingspeciallol.

They seem to remember just fine once they were reminded by Irvine (who never used GF before the assasination mission) and Selphie (the youngest and least user) anyway so that fucking undermined that point. And if you wanna get really technical about it, nearly every single student at every single Garden (Balamb, Galbadia, Trabia, the White SeeD ship) were orphans. Cid explicitly gathered up orphans to train up as child soldiers. A child coming from a family, like adopted child Zell, was rare. So that this group of orphans Cid had personal contact with 80% ended up at Balamb Garden, which he ran, isn't astonishing either.

It's just a fucking retarded plot point. The TWEEST doesn't make the story better. It turns a lot of people off. I loved FF8, but even I said, "wtf is this shit."

I hated Tidus when I first played X when I was about 12ish years old, I thought he was lame. I still don't like his design, but after replaying X about 3 years ago his character really grew on me. I think his character development throughout the game is really well done. He goes from being a spoiled and annoying kid to a very reliable man, willing to take charge and make real sacrifices. I also don't think his voice acting is bad, it's okay. I don't get why people rip on the laughing scene, it is purposely awful and totally works in context.

I wouldn't consider Tidus one of the best FF protags, but he's in the top half I would say.

James Arnold Taylor did amazing subtlety with Tidus' voice throughout the game. You can hear his narration in the beginning when he says "listen to my story" and compare it to his voice later and realize he is very slowly progressing from an upbeat teenager to a more mature guy.

FF8 was not my first that was FF6.
But I enjoyed FF8 the most.
I've played every FF except for 2 and 11.
There were so many memorable parts from FF8.
The garden battle.
The sneaking mission on the train.
Trying to assassinate the sorceress during the parade.
Getting through the aliens on the spaceship.

While it would be cool to get a remake of FF8 I wish they would make a FF8 spinoff all about Laguna and his gang.
The ending song,"Eyes on Me"was about Laguna.
