Conquest mode is way better than I thought it would be.
You get the satisfaction of setting off a huge chain and destroying an opponent, but then another one comes back, forcing you to deal with the extra puyos you left.
Then, they drop garbage at a good constant rate. That forces you to learn how to deal with garbage.
Definitely the best mode to practice Puyo 101 in.

First a foremost, you have to be really comfortable with your pieces. After that, you need pattern recognition. Take a look at this guide.
With all of these, you need to develop your own techniques to build these. Things to help you remember.
Finally, focus on using GTR. I've seen people use other methods, but GTR definitely seems to be the most common.

Also, you need to figure out how to manage your colors on the second floor so that you don't eat your chains. For that, I recommend reading all of https://puyonexus.com/wiki/Efficiency_1:_Color_Decisions and all the links around this that interest you.

What are you referring to? That Puyo Trainer thing that people keep posting drops Puyos two at a time, doesn't it?

If you mean the Puyo Nexus chainsim, then that's not really the point of it. Forcing two Puyo placements at a time would just be a time-waster for people trying to create or test chains and builds with it. Besides, it's not impossible. If you lay 10 puyos and then pop 5 at once, you'll be left with an odd number of puyos remaining.

What I will agree with is that people who make tutorials and such for Puyo should really include tips for what beginners should do with pieces that don't help them. The only thing I could come up with when I was starting out was just using the farthest column as a "junk column" where I pile up my pieces that I don't need until I get the ones I do need. And that sounds like a terrible habit to get used to, one that I'm still having trouble with sometimes.

I do try to do this, but what should I do with Puyos I don't need? I try to use them to build on my chain as best as I can, but there's always at least a few useless ones I can't put anywhere else.

Color Resistant techniques include things like GTR and sandwich, as opposed to a stair transition or stairs in general. Take a look at the stair transition and note what the guide says about color limitations.
