Yes, devil worshippers are a thing, and yes they get powers which can't really be explained without magic (e.g. making people sick, making people loyal by possessing them with a demon).
But it's fun, so who cares?

Hermetic society is way better, you can get two artifacts every time you reach the top rank.

No idea what the other societies are for. They seem like they're just bullshit where the devs ran out of new ideas
