No matter what game gets posted at number 1, it will be called overrated.

I am very fine with Crono Trigger sitting at that spot. It is unironically a timeless classic that will never feel dated. I played it the first time in 2004 when I was already 14, so I missed all the buzz surrounding it and I think it's incredible in every possible way.

Witcher 3 doesn't deserve being anywhere even close to a top 10 though. It is very close to Planescape Torment, which absolutely mops the floor with its face. Both have bad gameplay, but at least Torment has the excuse of being released in the 90s, whereas Witcher 3 doesn't and feels like a fucking chore to play. It also has the worst loot system of any RPG I have ever seen and whereas in Torment you have an extremely rich dialogue tree that is not only WAY better written than Witcher 3's, it also feels like a game since you have actual agency over what happens next. You can even smooth talk your way out of pretty much the entire game except for 2 encounters IIRC, you can become someone's friend or sworn enemy merely by picking different choices, etc. It actually feels like you're roleplaying, while in Witcher 3 you're basically just reading through a script set in stone where your choices are merely illusions and don't lead you to different paths. There is no roleplaying to be had. You might as well read an actual book.

Unless they're giving NWN points for its toolkit and the fan-created content, this is ridiculous. The built-in campaign was so terrible that NWN was the last AD&D computer game I played.

Prior to NWN, I had played and tremendously enjoyed Baldur's Gate I & II and Icewind Dale I & II.

Betrayal at Krondor was an incredibly good game, especially for its time, and I think it still holds up today. This is true even if you play the game without knowing anything about Feist's books.

I've played 4 and 5 and am getting into 3 now. The story seems better and the social links seem tremendously better. The gameplay is a lot clunkier. I'll reserve my opinions for when I finish, but overall I am enjoying it more than P5.

I heard that the subsequent NWN games were much better than the original campaign, especially the high-level campaigns like in Hordes of the Undrentide. However, the original campaign, and especially the stupid four "Words of Power" quests, turned me off the series entirely and I missed out on anything good afterwards.

Prior to NWN, I thought Bioware could do no wrong when it came to D&D games. Funnily, after skipping the subsequent NWN games and hearing so many good things about them, I gave Bioware another shot with Dragon Age: Origins. Maybe because I built the wrong character (male elf) but I didn't like the game. I especially disliked the variety in the monsters fought.

As for the rest of the top 100 list, I really think Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar should be in the top 10 of any such list. It's play mechanics are still amazing even today. Crafting of spells with reagents and magic words (there were two secret spells the player could figure out on his own if he studied the game lore) and the ultimate objective of the game, which was not kill the bad, bad Magilla in the final dungeon.

How well a game has aged is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter how good it was at the time. It's a solid title, but it's an 8/10 at best and that's extremely generous. Probably because SaGa is aimed at the wrong people. It is probably stuck in an odd place. It has a place in Japan, but when it comes over to the west who do you think gets these JRPG's? What are these JRPG players expectations of RPG's that come out of Japan? Once a JRPG leaves Japan it appeals to a certain sort of audience/s.

SaGa rubs the general JRPG liking audience in the wrong way due to its myriad of different mechanics that are often not traditional to how the more open entries in the series don't give you the sort of direction that fan of the genre crave.
