It originally started because of a glitch that happened when generating a new world it'd sometimes bring over bits and pieces of buildings from previous worlds, meaning you'd see random man-made objects when normally that wasn't possible (This was before they added underground mineshafts and npc villages)
Then for some reason they made a shitty ghost story about notch having a dead younger brother who haunted the game or something
