How come VR never kicked off?
>>
It's sold out everywhere, people make lines in front of the store when there's stock.

Never kicked off? It's currently kicking more off than your mother anus, so that's something.

I have a vive for a year now.

Aside from enjoying my giant lady fetish, it's not practical for long time play. Trust me, it's neat and cool to interact with a world with very responsive controllers but eventually you don't feel like playing it as much.

What would help tremendously is making more weirdly available with cheaper computing (a good decade off), lighter framework (not just the recent 15%. Should be like sunglasses), and wireless (though this is being worked on). Price is the biggest issue though. Just keep your eyes peeled ten years from now.

Widely not weirdly, phone typo
>>
Isn't motion sickness still a big problem?
>>

Still too expensive and lacking a killer app. Most games for it are basically proofs of concept or weird little toys

i imagined some listing for a vive that's all "free as long as you climb the tallest tree in the Amazon with a Bonobo Ape strapped to your back"

RE7 is a good VR product, but the fact that it's PSVR exclusive while the game is multiplat is absolutely retarded. Sony is shooting the industry in the foot for some quick buck.
Then again, VR needs about ten more RE7's to be worth it and they aren't coming so maybe Sony sees the writing on the wall.

It is for any games that give you free movement, which is why everything for VR is pretty much "cinematic" or toy box bullshit where you stand in one place and can't move from your spot.

It's too expensive and there's nothing really to appeal to people beyond those who like playing simulators which is all it's really good for.

VR is a "first person only" gimmick which severly limits it. Now I'm not saying FP can't be cool but it does hinder gameplay most of time.

the true power of vr was released already and people overpaid for the garbage tech back then too. until we have vr tied into our nervous system and we can feel and smell it too. it will continue to be a gimmick
>>
>>376043401
a gimmick would be the fact its pushed every fucking decade and then dropped you fucking faggo. you gonna be making the same defense threads in 2027 when it is being pushed as innovation again for the ps5 scorpio pro nx v.1.98
>>
>Games exclusive to fucking headsets from the get-go

I can understand PSVR cause it's more of an add-on for the PS4 but having exclusivity on VR games for $600-800 headsets in the case of Rift and Vive was a fucking joke
>>
>>376041404
So much this, I still consider VR as a "toy".
>>
>>376040614
Expensive as fuck with no software. The VR games need to be BETTER THAN normal games to sell that expensive hardware, not a bunch of proof of concepts, prototypes and fucking VR equivalents of fruit ninja. What needs to be done is all the major corporations with VR products throwing a couple of hundred million dollars on talented devs to create some actual games. We could be having vast immersive RPG VR worlds RIGHT NOW if the developers and consumers weren't so goddamn dogshit.

Like human flight, for thousands of years, or computer networking! Both of those were completely useless technologies until people made them work.
>>
Most 'games' are tech demos. They demonstrate potential, but that's all they do. They're like huge sandboxes, toys you can play for a few minutes just so you can 'experience' VR.

Furthermore, VR headsets aren't cheap, and some people just see it as plain weird.
>>
Alright any corporate heads reading this, this is how you make VR take off:
>-50% price
>all exclusivity dropped
>FIFA game with VR
>Skyrim with VR
>Elder Scrolls VI with VR
>Portal 3 with VR
>Left 4 Dead 3 with VR
>Star Citizen with full VR
>some new Battle Royale game with VR
>more RE games with VR
>VR stealth games, maybe MGS VR remasters or Splinter Cell or whatever
see? its fucking ez
>>
Mainly three reasons-

1. Expensive
3. No true gamechanger, RE7 is the closest and it's on fucking PSVR.
2. Difficult to advertise because you actually need to try the damn thing.

this, and also wait a couple of years when we might get games like this :

but there's still a long way to go

Expansive games just take time to make. Valve has 3 full fledged game sin the works, and Fallout 4 is coming soon.
This stuff is going to be a slow steady build up, almost nothing is worth owning in it's first year.

VR is very underrated. A lot of people unfortunately don't currently understand the the potential it has.

It will be revolutionary for education. The next generation students will learn about things like space exploration in ways we weren't even able to dream of when we were in class.
>>
>>376050990
Yeah there are tons of non gaming applications for it, but the price is going to have to come down to make it viable for normies.
Also phone VR is shit, it doesn't compare. Phone VR isn't the future that some people think, it's a gimmick. Even PSVR on a console blows it out of the water.
>>
The point of vr was originally to get the sense of sight perfectly substituted.
The 2 main companies that rushed VR to the open market had no interest in this. They wasted their development time on gimmicky bullshit like motion controls, and integrated them into the platform's very core. To make a VR game not only do you have to make a VR game, but you also have to make a motion-controlled game.
For 2 different platforms, because valve and facebook segmented the already tiny market in half in an attempt at staking their personal monopoly.
Added ontop of that was the unnecessarily elaborate setup process. Most consumers are too dumb to set up a vive and it's return rates are through the fucking roof as a result, with most people never even getting to use it.

Microsoft wants to fix this by making it windows-standard drivers with their "mixed reality" idea which seems to be the best course of action, as of right now it just seems like valve and facebook jumped the shark while jumping the gun and accomplished nothing of value.
Give it 2-3 years, long enough for valve and facebook to fuck off, and then maybe we'll get something worthwhile out of VR.
For now use it for porn and forget you wasted over a grand on useless headsets like me.
>>
>>376051104
I think actually most people are well aware of the potential, and not just in gaming and movies, but we're still years away from VR being common.

Think of smartphones, they have existed for decades but blew up only very recently, mainly because of other factors like social media and the ease to develop applications on them.

I'm sure VR will be big in a couple of years, but right now it's really niche

Expensive
Lacks a killer app
Most "games" for it are just proof of concepts or shitty indie toys
Lots of people can't play it at all due to motion sickness
It's unviable for long term play because it's a big headset putting pressure on your face and neck
It still doesn't feel "real" like people imagined, it just feels like you're playing a game with a 350 degree view
VR devices are just displays and require another device to actually play the game
Bulky and can't take it with you
It only plays games and nothing else
Still requires controllers that break your immersion

So basically once someone comes out with a VR solution that
>Solves motion sickness problem
>Lightweight
>Affordable
>Standalone
>Portable
>Has good, exclusive launch titles that can rival other systems
>Can do things besides games (similar to how a PC can play games but also browse the internet/be productive, or how a smartphone can play games but also browse internet, run apps, communicate)
>Can be controlled without holding anything in your hands
it will be a huge hit, like an iPhone tier money printer. But until then VR is niche at best and unviable at worst. The market just isn't there.
>>
>>376051894
>Think of smartphones, they have existed for decades but blew up only very recently
What?
I really hope you're not comparing things like palm pilots to actual smartphones.
The major development that made smartphones viable wasn't hardware, it was user intuitiveness.
>>
>>376051782
I can tell you've never actually tried any of the current headsets. Roomscale and proper tracking is vital to a proper VR experience. There's a reason every modern headset has some form of hand tracking. The first thing you want to do when your in a virtual world is try to interact with it. You naturally want to reach out and touch what's in front of you. Without that, you area literally just strapping a monitor to your face, you might as well play the game on a TV at that point.
>>
>>376052053
PDA's are essentialy smartphones, yes.
they are not current gen smartphones, but the concept of combining telephony and computing is reached by the lat 90's
>>
>>376040614
Paying as much or even more than a console just for another kinect-tier gimmick. I don't know, you tell me OP.
>>
>>376041135
Just out of interest, what giant lady games are there for VR?

I'm asking for a friend who has a Vive.

Also. The kit is too expensive (I paid over £500 for my Vive) and quite complicated for the layman to set up and configure. It's a hobbyist thing.
