The entire point of the item "balancing" is to prevent players from staying in the same position.

Nintendo's two main audiences are children and hardcore autists, and there's a huge skill gap there. Balancing everything around fucking over the best players makes that skill gap appear smaller, and this means that children/normies are more likely to keep playing for longer because they feel like they now have a chance to win.

You're applying singleplayer tactics to multiplayer. The best strategy is to hoard items then sit pretty in 2-4th place until you commit your usurpation at the end of the final lap. If you're driving perfectly, you will have at least 1/4th of the course ahead of 2nd place. Blue shell is no threat with a good acceleration build.
2nd-3rd will be constantly attacking each other which makes 1st place guy get even farther ahead to the point that launching items to 1st is not worth it.

Yeah undogable items (you could dodge red shell in ds if you were good), slow speed, removal of snaking and automatic rubberbanding killed Mario Kart. A lot of people were bitching about constantly being destroyed in DS, so Nintendo had to make sure everyone could win at all times instead of creating a ranked system. Its a dead franchise IMO, and I loved DS, DD and WII.

Because if you could just keep getting shells all the time the person who pulls ahead in first would always fucking win.

I think being able to hold two items in first place is fucking stupid and even I think first place shouldn't be able to defend themselves all the time.

Yes, and in past Mario Kart games, once you got a certain lead you were pretty much immune to everything. Nobody could catch you and nobody could slow you down, because nothing short of an exceptionally rare Blue Shell or Lightning Bolt would even touch you.

Get the double item box, you'll rarely get two coins so you always have at least one defensive item on you. If you're good at the game then you should be able to come first 10 times out of 10. No excuse.

It's funny because one of the "upgrades" to the game completely fucking broke it instead. Double item slots make items way, WAY more prominent than in the base game and make it absolutely fucking impossible to break out of the pack of placements that are being fucked endlessly by items. It also means that the person in first will hold it forever because they have two defensive items rather than one, and have more chances to get a non-coin.
