Played perfect dark recently. No idea how I beat that as a kid. It's fucking hard.

There's a level where you gotta knock a guy out, change into a costume, sneak into a lab and use an x-ray scanner to scan an alien pod then go to an autopsy room and rescue an alien all in under 2 minutes. And your only very vaguely told what to do or where to go. No quest markers like in modern games that tell you to the foot where to go. And if you fuck it up you have to restart the entire level. No checkpoints.

I dunno how I did it at 10 without the internet.

Old turn based RPG with potentially brutal combat, massive world to explore, lots of lore, customisable party etc.

It's done by Spiderweb Software. The Exile trilogy has been remade twice, the most recent remakes are Avernum: Escape From The Pit and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls with Avernum 3: Ruined World being in development.

They're great games desu, the old ones haven't aged well at all, they're nostalgic for me and a lot of fun but you might be better off with the new Avernum remakes.

One of the few games that captures the same sort of experience as tabletop rpgs. The world is huge, various interesting quests and storylines, some places are full of things that will fuck your shit up.

Quake 2 on N64 was a totally different game with different maps.

007 Nightfire on PC is actually a pile of shit in comparison to the PS2/GC versions

All the early Harry Potter games were totally different on every platform, all made by different teams.

It was just how things were back then. Pretty weird, but also interesting. Was likely because funding a videogame didn't cost upwards into themulti-millions back then.

i played this in multiplayer when i was about 8ish

it had a surprisingly active MP community for a while

people would harass and bully me for not typing or typing fast enough so i forced myself to learn how to type without really knowing home row. i can do 90 wpm without really even trying and i don't type conventionally. this game has had an oversized impact on my life because that typing speed has landed me many job opportunities.

I think they even marketed it with "advanced artificial stupidity". The game was great, I managed to buy a CD for pennies online about a year ago for nostalgia value. I never made it far, the camera really fucked you over sometimes, savestates make this bearable but do kind of ruin some of the experience, I find myself quicksaving often before jumps just in case the camera wants to go wild and make me lose a ton of progress.

Original team left, like 3 games got canceled, Black Online didn't last long, and 2012 got lukewarm reception and by 2012 interest in TM and the vehicular mayhem genre in general had waned to virtually nothing.

Vehicular mayhem was an odd gen 5 trend (TM, Vigilante 8, Rogue Trip, etc.) that just didn't last.

I didn't find out until years later that Black was largely considered the best. My best friends and I loved 1-4 and Small Brawl but we didn't really care for the direction Black took the series, or the cast of characters/vehicles it had, or the maps. Just felt like it was trying too hard to be dark. Combat was solid but it just didn't feel fun.

The overlaping 'comic book'-esque 90s anime styled cutsceenes were so well done. The plot twists, while typical now, were pretty fresh and unique then. I was a big fan of RPGs back in the day and this one really stuck out. Sure PS4 is no Chrono Trigger (which came out 3 years later, mind you), but damn was it good.

Also had a combat system that rewarded experimentation and even allowed you to make macros of spells and abilities to speed combat along. Even allowed for the combination casting of spells. One character casting Fire and another Wind created a giant firestorm for example. It was really great.

I went back and played all the previous phantasy stars but none of them really stand up to 4
