While I go to school I make my living as a repair technician. My boss has said, openly, multiple times, that I am the best tech the company has had in 30 years.

What donyou think is more likely? I'm some kind of savant, which he claims? Or I'm just some fuck spent twenty three years beforehand practicing problem solving skills? It's the same basic shit. Have problem, have tools, use tools to solve problem.

You're not going to become macguyver because you played some Zelda, but they're not unrelated.

I mean sure, that's silly when someone who's halfass playing assfaggots is saying that, but what's the problem if we're talking competitive FPS, programming games, and physical exercise music games like DDR and Dance Central?

My brother is finished is PhD in psychology a few years back and we had an interesting conversation about this sort of stuff.

Apparently specific skills are really difficult to remove from context (if you, for instance, played a game about building an engine, you wouldn't necessarily be able to build an engine outside the context of the game).

However, games DO seem to increase general skills, like spatial reasoning, dead reckoning, multi-tasking.

Games teach you to imagine mechanics. They're perfect for this because, unlike reality, they're illusions erected on top of a bed of actual mechanics that have rigid formulas. You sort through the appearances to get at the mechanics that govern them, and thats how you leverage your power in the game world. Above all, it's fun.

Life doesn't start from math equations like vidya, yet you still stand to empower yourself if you can generalize the appearance of your life into mechanisms/formulas. Again, games are a training ground for this precisely because they get you to articulate things as sophisticated mechanisms, which is a bigger picture that let's you anticipate the future to some extent. If anything, you can do this faster and better than others.

It's just an interactive movie. Don't overthink it.
The rating system also proves this argument invalid.
>>
>>376042553
What you want is a FUN hobby that you can circulate in the world, for money, prestige, excitement in general. Painting is good if you're passionate because it's not about being "productive", it's about experimenting with how the sight of the world makes you (and others) feel. Its deeply satisfying and causes interesting things to happen to you.

A lot of people who mouth off about "productivity" are trying to give SOME kind of meaning to what they're doing through a dreary life-management lens (they operate their life like driving a car, passionless and dissociated but "in control"). Productivity only matters if it strengthens your ability to access the finer excessive things in life. My point is to prioritize the feeling and passion, and you can get at finer human things without being a "productive instrument".
>>
>>376043087
>Reading

Just reading isn't automatically productive unless you're still learning how to read.

If you're reading a textbook or some other educational material for the purpose of acquiring skills for the workplace, then it's productive. But reading some gay-ass fantasy novel doesn't qualify as "productive" just because your mommy told you that reading is good and video games are bad.
>>
>>376043087
>Painting, drawing, sculpting, etc

These are productive only in the literal sense that you're physically producing something, even if it's shit.

If "productive" is supposed to mean "not a waste of time" then your art better be good enough to sell or to put in an art gallery. If no one else wants to look at your shitty art, then creating it purely for your own enjoyment is precisely as "productive" as playing a video game.
>>

Also playing vidya inspires me creatively. I like exploring worlds, soaking up the atmosphere, setting, character/level/object design, and the overall feeling you get from it.

That's how the Vanilla WoW and Overwatch lead dev got his job you know. He was a raid leader back in Everquest. It's a legitimate thing to put on your resume but you have the reword it carefully.

Like don't just say "I was a raid leader in WoW and that taught me how to lead". You have to translate that into how those skills affect the real world. Not very hard to do.
>>
>>376046137

Explain exactly how it's more productive than playing a video game.

Hard mode: You can't make assumptions about the kind of video game I'm talking about. If you reply with "hurr durr Call of Duty doesn't exercise your mind" then I'm done.
>>
>>376046465
of course not

>>
>>376046743
what do you have?

>>
>>376046575
you don't have to actually think while playing a video game. all of them are typically as simple as 1+1=2. they all give you the images they are portraying right there in front of you rather than you imaging them yourself. at least with reading, there is a bit of work the mind must to to appreciate the material. especially with actual literature. but even that being said, even shit books are better than great video games.
>>
>>376047000
CS-undergrad, which makes me infinitely more educated and employable than your faggot brother and his faux-degree
>>
>>376046990
Even then the reword part still is true. If you put general things on your resume, expect it to get tossed into garbage. You have to elaborate on your skills and how they fit into the workplace. Leading a video game group to get gear is one thing, leading a development team of 100+ people is another.
>>
>>376036462
No they don't. Hobbies are considered hobbies because they're done in one's leisure time. If they were done for a purpose and weren't being enjoyed, then it's no longer a hobby but rather an obligation or job.

You are obsessing too much with "productivity" if you care about ranking hobbies on which are productive. Not everything people do has to be productive to be good. Many things are "productive" only under certain assumptions and point-of-views, for example there is the stereotype of the starving artist, would all of society consider this artist to be "productive"?

As a healer in savage parties, you're expected to heal and DPS at the same time while juggling every mechanic that happens. There's hardly any downtime at all as a SCH. At level 60 with buffs and melds your GCD should be lower than 2.5, that's not even counting oGCDs or micromanaging your scholar pet to manually heal different specific targets while you pump as much damage out.
