It's a good game. End game is sadly pretty empty. Needed more quests later.
But first chapter is genuinely good.
Risen two is sadly kind of shit. The whole game is linear and it only has a hand full of tiny islands instead of one open world.
Risen three is a bit better than that, but still has issues.

You will sometimes find herbs that permanently increase str or dex. Don't eat them, they can be made into more potent potions later.

Save stat chagning potions and herbs. You can train strength up to 100 but with potions you can reach 200.

Do literally everything in the world before joining a side for max exp in case you want to be as powerful as possible.

Once you join a faction you get locked out of recruitment quests for others.

theres a gamebreaking bug that can brick your save that happens somewhat randomly depending on... no one knows

There are 3 types of heroes you can do.
Full Mage
Bandit
Inqusitor Pet
Don't even get caught by Inqusition force and thrown in to monastyr if you dont wanna become mage or pet.
Get to the city first, chose which faction you wanna follow.
Explore and chill.

if you want to get the full experience, go into the Camp first and finish all their quests, then go into city without getting caught
then decide your own faction as you will have the largest amount of options

The bandit camp is useful for minimaxing like you said, but it's also a great way to learn about some game mechanics and the game world while doing some stuff that will be unavaiable later if you join Mendonza. But I agree with you, if OP wants to roleplay as a mage or Inquisition-bro, he should go straight to the city.
