Why are SMTfags so insecure about Persona?

It's more popular. But it's also because Persona is a gateway into MegaTen and people who are ignorant to the rest of the franchise go in the other games looking for more Persona.

Personally, while I really like both, I can get how it feels like SMT gets the shit-end of the stick. The last SMT I played were the two Digital Devil Sagas, and that's because they were on console. The others were on handhelds, so I just never got a chance (nor did I consider emulating).

The SMT games were moodier but also had a goofy charm to them. Nocturne was particularly imposing, not just for the difficulty but also the overall tone of the game. I liked that, and the art direction and soundtrack helped tremendously.

Persona, comparatively, is a lighter pill to swallow while still retaining prominent elements of the SMT series. And I guess I should say, 'modern Persona', since I recall P2 at the very least feeling similarly in tone to SMT than say, P3/4 or 5. Which isn't a bad thing; the present day Persona series is it's own thing, and I'm glad it is.

It's lighter and easier to swallow, and that seemingly more 'innocent' appearance belies some darker undertones. It's a good combination of stuff, with a likeable cast of characters and a system that, while still grindy, feels a bit more rewarding.

tl;dr: I don't hate Persona at all; I love it. I just haven't had a chance to play the recent SMTs and for a while there, I felt like Persona became Atlus' primary focus.

And it more than likely has, but can you blame them? It's hilariously more accessible. SMT is more niche than the niche that is Persona. That's just how shit is. I prefer, love and adore SMT, but I'm not gonna throw a tantrum over Persona's popularity

Nah. I went in P3 expecting some kind of mastrrpiece with how loved it is here (it was before P5) but it just ended up being a slightly better written highschool slice of life animu. The pacing, gameplay, visual and characters were all pretty boring. In the end I just did whatever social link would give me the coolest demons because none of them were interesting.

P5's dungeon design is worlds better than P3/4's dungeon design. It's gone back to actual properly-built dungeons with puzzles like P1/2, only not quite as sadistic as P1.
Well, there is Mementos which has randomly-generated floors, but it's not as tedious as Tartarus. Actually, that depends. A lot of people dislike Mementos because its theme is kinda boring. I disliked it at first but...it grew on me. I don't really know how, but it grew on me.

The direction persona 3 took the series completely removed it's core identity. The art style is now pretty generic and colourful to the point where it became an idol game with FE. The social links idea is fine but it's all people care about on the Persona side, they're more into dating sims than folklore pokemon.

I don't think Persona is a bad concept. I think it has legs to be it's own genre. I just don't want it to replace my grim dark pokemon adventures with it's waifu bait. SMT3 is really close to a perfect RPG for me and the fact that they moved so far from it afterwards is disappointing.

The difference is that it's a completely different story and you're telling someone it's a direct sequel. It's the equivalent of Pokemon Platinum being an additional/alternate story to Diamond and Pearl. Also, whether Nanashi accepted Dagda's offer or whether he even chose Nanashi instead of another random person isn't ever touched upon in the DLC. The only thing that we know is that whatever leads up to Krishna being freed never happens in IV's universe. For all we know Krishna may not have been like that in IV's universe and as such, either never tried to get freed or was just another god who got killed like the rest of IV's gods. Like I said, the SMT revolves around a multiverse and infinite possibilities.

The P2 games follow the same kind of logic but the fact that both stories are interconnected and the characters from the first game actually play a story factor in the sequel is what makes it a fucking sequel, you mongoloid. IV and IVA have absolutely nothing to do with each other aside from IVA being an example of the butterfly effect and how one detail can cause drastic changes in another timeline. You don't even meet any of IV's chars or know what happens with that Flynn until you play the DLC, and you meet the other MCs as well in that, so it doesn't count.
