i think there's a big difference between a highly polished, atmospheric dark fantasy game and one like the OP pics. something really unsettling about an unfinished looking game, especially with no music or anything. reminds me of getting to emerald dream on some private wow server way back when, always found it kinda creepy

The only "creepy" aspect of Dark Souls I can find is the path to Sen's from the Parish bonfire. And it's a personal stretch, only because it reminds me of the edges of the levels for the Phantom Menace pc game's sunset Theed level, which was level 5 or so.

I often thought about making a n64 style game where it 'glitches out', like a lost ROM of Zelda or something, but.. what would be the point? What would be the objective?

What should they be allowed to discover, find, etc?

It wouldn't be hard to make some sort of weird glitchy game but to make it good in that weird sense, to make it worth playing, that's the tough part.

I don't mean glitchy, i just think itd be cool to play a game with Zelda oot style exploration and puzzle solving, with simpke but rewarsing nechanics and lots of hidden stuff and secrets, and charming npcs, all these Zelda staples. But juxtapose them with unsettling enemies and genuinely creepy dungeons, like the well dungeon in OoT, or a lot of the stuff in majoras mask. Maybe outside of towns you'll occasionally see someone following you at a distance, watching you at night. Stuff that's just a little strange and unsettling, and occasional actual scary monsters and stuff.
Dark souls is so relentlessly gothic and grim that it's not scary. I'm never surprised to see a giant skeleton, or boss with his guts hanging out, because that's what everything looks like.
