Nah, DMC1 was still finding it's place and the genre of 3D action games was still new. DMC1 has growing pains, which isn't a bad thing, but it's not an insult to say that later games improved on the formula. DMC3 is objectively better in almost every way except maybe enemy aggression. Bayonetta and DMC3/4 are better comparisons and as much as I prefer DMC overall, Bayonetta is the better game.

I still stand by Itsuno being overall better at action games than Kamiya though.

Sorry, the only thing "dated" about DMC1 is it's camera. DMC3 indeed took the game's framework and put it's own spin on it, and it'd be bullshit to say it's not an improvement in it's own right. However I can still sit down and plow through DMC1 to this day, going fast and killing shit fast with critical hits, etc. DMC3 took the series into a combo heavy direction, and thus most people see DMC1 as some relic from the past because it doesn't play essentially like the soft reboot DMC3 was.

Can't comment on Bayo, tried a little bit of it, but honestly wasn't feeling it from what I did play.
