How does Mario lore explain Boos all being called Teresa in Japan?

This can't be true

Oh it's true, it's damn true.
Teresa was the name of a goddess who once was the primary figure of worship in the Mario world. However, when Toadstool I conquered the land, he mandated that he be worshiped and all literature, images, sculptures, etc. of Teresa be burned. Over many generations of rule under the Toadstool dynasty, Teresa was eventually forgotten. Teresa, losing her power and realizing she was no longer relevant and never would be again, decided to end her existence, but left remnants of her spirit in the world as a way of punishing the race that betrayed her.
Miyamoto hated this lore and did everything in his power to make it disappear, even going so far as to hire the Yakuza to keep people quiet. It was, however, too late. The name "Teresa" stuck and everybody knew it. The best he could do was change the name for localization so the info wouldn't leave Japan. Obviously it did, though.
