Except that's not Adachi's motivation, that's his reasoning for why it was okay to kill those two stuck up bitches.

His motivation was boredom plus a want to take out his frustrations on a world and society that, in his mind and opinion, overlooked and devalued him for people that were simply born luckier/more talented than him.

He's never presented with a better option towards achieving that goal, for multiple reasons one of which being that his end goal would mean everyone being Shadows which is basically as good as dead.

Goro's end goal of shaming his father and bringing his life crashing down could have easily been achieved multiple times. He's a bastard child born out of scandal to a shithead politician that was trying to climb the ranks, who then all but abandoned the woman up until the day she died. That alone would have ruined Shido's career.

To be fair, unless literally all of his victims were in Mementos he probably had to do a decent bit of digging to find the locations and keywords for Palaces on his own. Considering how many of his victims were crooks themselves, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually did have to do a decent bit of detective work to dig up info on his targets.

Well, yeah it was. He never really solved any crimes, but I can't imagine that he didn't have to put in any thought to reach his targets at all. If any of them had palaces at all, he had to have been able to figure out their location and what that person saw it as.
It's kinda shit that as far as the game goes that idea isn't acknowledged at all. It'd be nice to get confirmation but I think he could do it. He's not a total dumbass after all. He did do extremely well in school and on top of that his wit was the only reason the Phantom Thieves managed to reach Sae's treasure. If anything he's just extremely misguided.

I was under the impression he didn't use palaces or any of that, he just found their shadow and used Loki to make them crazy, after which he captured them. Besides Shido was founding him throughout this time so it's not hard to imagine someone else did a lot of the leg work for him. Also giving him credit for Sae's palace is a little stupid since all he did was carry an extra card with him. It wouldn't have been very hard to find some way to cheat passed it without him. I know the game tries to make him come off as extremely smart and dangerous but to me he just seems like a really stupid jackass.

You're right, but that also highlights the point that Goro lost because he relied only on himself, whereas the Phantom Thieves came up with that plan by putting eight heads together as well as a lot of preparation that had the whole group working. But yeah, the game definitely could have done a much better job of showing his supposed intelligence than what we got.
Man, I really want to like Goro. The ideas they had for his character seemed pretty great to me, but when they were put to practice they pretty much just halfassed and rushed everything. He very easily could have had a lot more going for him as a villain.

I can agree with that.I feel like Akechi's biggest problem is he didn't get enough meaningful screen time. He comes off as a stupid idiot because he doesn't get a lot of chances to show his smarts. He comes off as unsympathetic and insane because you only get one real heartfelt conversation over the year before he goes crazy and starts ranting and laughing about murdering you and your friends. It feels stupid when the PT start to sympathize with him after his fight because up until then they showed nothing but contempt for him and only allowed him on the team for the sole purpose of using and manipulating him. If he had scenes where they actually got to know him, were he was shown as competent, or if we actually got to be real friends with him it might have made him work a bit better than not at all.

Yeah, I've got a handful of ideas at how to fix his character along those lines. Maybe he'd be lying to himself and believe he's actually carrying out justice by helping Shido? He'd know he was just a puppet from the beginning, but he'd set up some insane set of lies to tell himself that both killing Shido's enemies and bringing him down. He'd tell himself that what he's doing is justice, considering a lot of Shido's enemies were crooked. All as just a way to justify his actions. When he goes full autistic screeching mode in his boss fight, he'd finally admit to himself that he really just fucking hates his father and wants to bring him down at the peak of his power for the best possible revenge. When Cognitive Goro shows up he'd instead not be a dumbass, saying that he always knew something like that would happen and laugh about how he'd failed to be careful enough. Other than that, the game should have taken a lot more time to develop him across the story instead of giving you a rank up every time you passed by and said hi. I've said it in other threads but talking to him in Leblanc was a great opportunity they completely wasted.

Just a few small changes to make his character a lot more believable, and we'd be gold.
